Historical Information

Albemarle County was named for William Anne Keppel, second earl of Albemarle and governor of the Virginia colony from 1737 to 1754. It was formed from Goochland County in 1744, and part of Louisa County and certain islands in the Fluvanna River, now called the James, were added later. Its area is 740 square miles, and the county seat is Charlottesville.

Scope and Content

Albemarle County (Va.) Court Records, 1792-1874. The collection contains documents removed from chancery court cases and other unidentified court records series. Documents include letters, summonses, subpoenas, orders, notices, affidavits, depositions, bills, answers, decrees, petitions, accounts, and the wills of John Bailey, 1792, and James Gillum, 1845. Also included are documents from the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery for Albemarle County.
