Historical Information

Monongalia County (West) Virginia derived its name from the Monongahela River, although the county's name is spelled slightly differently. Monongahela is an Indian word meaning the river of crumbling or caving banks. Monongalia County was created in 1776 from the district of West Augusta, and parts of Augusta County were added in 1779 and 1780. Monongalia County was one of the fifty western Virginia counties to form the state of West Virginia in 1863.

Scope and Content

Monongalia County (W. Va.) Deed and Land Grants, 1787-1811. The collection contains one deed and eight land grants, as follows: a land grant to Isaac Sutton, Sr., assignee of Neely, 1793 Apr. 12; a land grant to Michael Statler, 1809 June 6; a land grant to William Dougherty, assignee of Andrew Ramsay, 1796 June 27; a land grant to Benjamin Wilson and George Hopkinson, 1796 Aug. 31; a land grant to Gervis Thomson, 1796 June 4; a land grant to Christopher Cartow, 1795 Mar.; two land grants to James Hendrickson, assignee of John Allison, 1787 Nov. 28 and 1787 Nov. 29; and a deed from Valentine Meriwether and wife to Archelous Hughes, 1811 Mar. 17.
