The collection contains photographs and negatives predominantly of historic Alexandria buildings and civic life from the 1910's to the 1940's. A small number of prints are from the late 19th century. The collection is made up of black and white prints and acetate negatives, with a small number of glass plate negatives and glass lantern slides. The collection has been split into two series.

The collection contains organizational records of the Alexandria Archaeological Commission as well as correspondence with the Smithsonian Institution prior to the 1975 formation of the Alexandria Archaeological Commission. Clippings, research notes and archaeology notes are included as well. Topics include: formation of the Alexandria Archaeology Commission, archaeological digs along King Street, research on the Henry Piercy family, and area merchants.

This collection contains research materials, ephemora, and photographs collected by or created by Mike McKenney, Thomas Mills Jr., and Thomas Mills III, that document the Alexandria Fire Department.

The collection contains manuscripts of columns, and manuscripts, correspondence and related material for his books The American South: Four Seasons of the Land; The American South: Towns and Cities; The Foxes' Union; and A Political Bestiary.

Congressional records of Herbert Bateman, William & Mary Class of 1949, House of Representatives, 1982-2000, First Virginia District. Includes records relating to congressional sessions such as budget, appropriations; local subjects including NASA, King William Reservoir, wetlands; weekly columns; speeches; schedule books, press releases, briefing books; campaign papers and other papers relating to his work in the House of Representatives. Herbert Bateman served on the Armed Services and Transportation and Infrastructure Committees.

The papers of Joseph Parisi, editor of Poetry from 1983-2008, ca. 15,750 items, 45 document boxes,23 cubic feet, include speeches, lectures, and introductions by Parisi; journal articles and reviews; literary correspondence; principally with poets, literary editors, and critics; miscellaneous materials related to the history of Poetry magazine; research materials, drafts and proofs related to publicaton of Dear Editor:a history of Poetry in letters: the first fifty years,1912-1962,; Between the lines: a history of Poetry in letters; and The Poetry anthology,1912-2002:ninety years of America's most distinguished verse magazine; documents by or about John Frederick Nims, including copies of letters, articles, and manuscripts; documents related to educational programs and large national projects with the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities; and, miscellaneous printed materials.

This collection consists of multiple accessions and includes, but is not limited to, incoming and outgoing correspondence, subject files, memorandums, invitations, newsletters, reports, invoices, and receipts. Correspondents include, but are not limited to, library board members, state and federal agencies, book and manuscript dealers, supply vendors, library associations, universities, historical societies, as well as, staff and patrons. While this series spans over 100 years, topics remain similar: budgets, policies and procedures, collection development, donations, acquisitions, patron requests, publications, building requirements and statistics.
