General Assembly Virginia-Maryland Boundary Records, 1688-1894 (bulk 1874-1876)

Abstract Or Scope

These records consist of an artificial collection of records related to the Virginia-Maryland boundary dispute, especially as it pertained to the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. Accession 45188 includes a manuscript copy of the Final Report of the Commissioners of Virginia upon the boundaries between Maryland and Virginia which was submitted by Gov. James L. Kemper to the Senate and House of Delegates on 26 January 1874. The report by Commissioners Henry A. Wise, D.C. DeJarnette, and William Watts includes copies of correspondence to/from the commissioners, James McDonald, Secretary of the Commonwealth; Governor Gilbert C. Walker; Governor Oden G. Bowie, Maryland; Isaac D. Jones, L.L. Waters, and William Aydelotte, Commissioners on the part of Maryland; Richard D. Cutts, Asst. U.S.C. Sr.; and others. In addition, the report provides depositions taken by the commissioners and a journal of the joint commission of Maryland and Virginia at Annapolis, Crisfield, and Baltimore between 8 May 1872 and 20 Nov. 1873. Lastly, the report includes copies of colonial documents such as Maryland Council proceedings from 22 August 1666 and patents issued during the Royal Government of Virginia for Accomack and Northampton counties.

Papers Compiled by Raymond Gorges for a Book on the Gorges Family 1616-1940

Abstract Or Scope

The Gorges family papers consist of ca. 5,000 items, 1616-1940, and contain the material used by Raymond Gorges to write his book, The Story of a Family through Eleven Centuries, History of the Gorges Family. The book provides an excellent guide to the materials; the items have been identified according to Mr. Gorges and left in the order used by him with slight modifications. The papers include genealogy information that Mr. Gorges used to produce his pedigree located at the end of the book. There are also family histories, beginning in 1066 when the family was in France; and individual biographies. This material contains information on the careers and schooling of family members as well as copies of their correspondence. The legal papers are an excellent source of English documents and provide added information on the family's interesting and noble history. Also provided is historical information used to provide background for Mr. Gorges' book. Included are Mr. Gorges' research notes which give some indication of his organization for the book. Altough he failed to publish it in his lifetime, his wife had the book published to his specifications. There are also postcards of country scenes in England and Ireland. The materials deal with the entire history of the family from 1066 to the 20th Century but original documents date from 1618. Also included is Mr. Gorges' personal correspondence about his research; this correspondence is interfiled with relevant materials. This is an excellent collection for historical information on England and Ireland especially the historical intertwining of the two nations.

Collections, 1864-2016, of Lieutenant Colonel Robert W. Rozman and Lieutenant Colonel Thomas R. Rozman consisting of photographs of Robert W. Rozman (1920-2008) undergoing military training at Camp Blanding, Florida, and Camp Shelby, Mississippi; in service in the Pacific Theater during World War II; at home on leave; and from his post-war military career. Photographs also include Robert Rozman's wife Candide Boucher Rozman (1924-2008), his son Thomas R. Rozman, members of the Rozman, Boucher and Gagne families serving in the military during and after World War II, as well as photographs of general military training and reviews. Collections include emails from Thomas R. Rozman providing context for the images.
