Abstract Or Scope

The Saleem Shah collection documents his work in forensic psychology and law, a specialized field he helped establish. The files, dating from the early 1960s to the time of his death, concern his many research and writing projects, work he did for various organizations including NIMH, international projects and travel, and correspondence with colleagues. The folder headings used here were copied from Shah's folders; occasionally, explanatory information has been added in brackets.

James Henry Reid Papers 1862-1867

Abstract Or Scope

The collection consists of the Civil War correspondence (18 items) of James Henry Reid. Included are 13 letters from Reid to his parents written while he was a fourth classman at the Virginia Military Institute, August - November 1862. This correspondence contains many references to wartime cadet life, including use of the term "rat" as a name for new cadets, hazing, uniforms, food, guard duty and other aspects of life at VMI during the Civil War. The papers also contain one letter (1864 March 7) written while Reid was serving with the 13th Virginia Light Artillery Regiment, Confederate Army; and 4 miscellaneous letters, 1865 and 1867.

The James H. Reid papers consist of the Civil War correspondence (18 items) of Reid. Included are 14 letters (dated August-November 1862) from Reid to his parents written while he was a fourth classman at VMI. Records of the Virginia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy divided into three series. Series I: Grave Marker Applications containing applications for markers for the graves of Confederate soldiers compiled by chapter and by locality, also including correspondence, rosters and histories of various Confederate regiments and companies, biographical sketches, reports, and other chapter papers; Series II: Southern Cross of Honor Applications for Confederate veterans and including lists of recipients; and Series III: Cross of Military Service Applications for descendants of Confederate veterans who served in the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection, World War I, and World War II and including lists and correspondence relating to both the Cross of Military Service and the Southern Cross of Honor.

Primary source documents, research materials and drafts for James Critchfield's book, "Partners at the Creation the Men behind Postwar Germany's Defense and Intelligence Establishments." Includes information on Germans imprisoned by the Allies, and on De-Nazification, for which Critchfield conducted interviews; also included are two copies of a booklet about a camps for detainees ("Camp 71"). The illustrated booklet is written in German and one English translation insert is provided. Further included are oral history transcripts and documents relating to the Berlin Crises (1958-1961), the founding of the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), the declassified Central Intelligence Agency documents (1945-1949), a German-English intelligence glossary, biographical files and correspondence. Includes some Holocaust materials and photographs of concentration camp victims.

Correspondence of the Fairfax family of Preston County including some of Colonel John Fairfax's business correspondence, 1803-1838. Colonel John Fairfax (1762-1843), an overseer for George Washington, settled with his family in the Preston County area in 1790. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates twice. He was instrumental in the formation of Preston County from Monongalia County and as the Sheriff, the muster of troops. He also served as the Justice of the Peace. Much of the John Fairfax correspondence appears to be legal papers stemming from these roles.

The Charles Rodrigues playbill collection consists of playbills and programs from 1879-2009. The bulk of the collection material represents plays performed on and off Broadway, but it also includes programs from theatres in Philadelphia, Boston, Connecticut, Long Island, New Jersey, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Ohio, and Chicago. This collection represents a broad cross-section of programs with plays as the main source, as well as, programs from burlesque houses, vaudeville performances, and concerts. Playbills can be important documents for researchers in that they depict the world of theatre changing over time and often provide rich information about prevailing cultural and social attitudes of the moment through articles and advertisements.

Literary manuscripts of Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973), an American fiction writer and humanitarian who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1938. She is best known for her novels about peasant life in China. The collection includes the great majority of manuscripts comprising Buck's literary works, including her novels, non-fiction, children's books, and short stories, as well as articles and speeches, among other material. There is also material about Pearl Buck. Formats include holographs, typescripts, typescript carbons, mixed manuscripts, galleys, and more. Prominent topics of Buck's literary works include: Chinese history, politics, and culture; American culture; international relations; adoption; children with disabilities; women's rights; and writing.
