The collection includes: correspondence and land records of Robert "King" Carter; correspondence and land records of his sons Robert Carter (1704-1731) and Landon Carter (1710-1778); correspondence, accounts, land records and the appointment to the Virginia Council of Robert Carter (1728-1804), son of Robert Carter (1704-1731); correspondence, diaries, land records and accounts of Robert Wormeley Carter (1734-1804), son of Landon Carter of Sabine Hall; and correspondence and land records and papers concerning the estate of Robert Carter's grandson, Landon Carter (1757-1820).

The 1x1 Japan Exhibition Materials consists of artwork and architectural drawings submitted by 47 women for a collaborative exhibition coordinated between the Japan chapter of UIFA and the IAWA Center's 1x1 Initiative. The collection also includes documentation of the exhibition, including title plates, reports, programs, and posters.

Abstract Or Scope

The Herbert E. Harris(1926-) papers, ca. 1974-1981, consist of ca. 43,000 items (107 Hollinger boxes, ca. 37 cubic feet), correspondence, newsletters, photographs notes, printed matter and miscellaneous materials resulting from Harris's tenure as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives during the 94th, 95th, and 96th Congresses, 1975-1981, representing the Eighth District of Virginia. These papers relate to his years in office until his defeat in his bid for reelection in November 1980. There is very little material specifically related to his campaigns for public office, and other miscellaneous activities.

Contains a list and register of joint stock companies within the state, letters with reports and amounts of taxes due or paid by joint stock companies, and two ledgers. The first ledger lists taxes on dividends paid by banks and insurance companies from 1861 to 1869. The second ledger lists taxes on dividends paid by banks and other businesses from 1843 to 1859.

Papers, 1795-1834 and n.d., of Eliza Kortright Monroe Hay. Includes letters written by and to her and to her father James Monroe. Correspondents include her former teacher Madame [Jeanne Louise Henriette] Campan, her daughter Hortensia M. Rogers of "Druid Hill" near Baltimore, Md. , her son-in-law Lloyd N. Rogers as well as the daughter of Marquis de Lafayette, Marie Antoinette Virginie de Lafayette Lasteyrie du Saillant. Subjects include the debts and final illness of James Monroe, the final illness of George Hay, the possible sale by the Hay family of "Ashfield," [near Richmond, Va.], the aftermath of the French Revolution, Hortense de Beauharnais (the stepdaughter of Napoleon and the mother of Napoleon III), Samuel L. Gouverneur and his wife Maria Hester Monroe Gouverneur, Tench Ringgold and Egbert Read Watson.

For his Ph.D. in Public Policy, Ron Fraser wrote a dissertation on the reauthorization of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) of 1991. The materials in this collection come from his dissertation research and include 44 microcassette audiotapes, transcriptions, and 5.25" floppy disks of interviews with upper-level transportation officials.

The Secretary of Education, Records, are housed in one hundred seventy-nine (179 boxes). The collection is arranged into seven (7) series. Series have been designated for: I. Cabinet Meeting Records, 2002-2005; II. Correspondence and Supporting Documentation - Assigned State Agencies, 1998-2005; III. Constituent Correspondence, 2002-2005; IV. Office of the Secretary, 2002-2006; V. Planning and Budget Files, 2001-2005; VI. Special Projects and Governor's Initiatives, 2001-2006; and VII. Additional Records. These records include agendas, agreements, articles, briefings, correspondence, e-mails, grants, handouts, legislation, lists, memorandums, minutes, notes, presentations, press releases, reports, resumes, speeches, studies, surveys and files by subject. These records document the work of the Secretary of Education under Governor Mark R. Warner. The most significant and voluminous material documents the development and implementation of the various educational initiatives of the Warner Administration including: Governor's Advisory Commission on Higher Education Board Appointments, Governor's Higher Education Summit, expanding College and University Research, Higher Education Restructuring, Education for a Lifetime Initiative (Early Childhood Initiative, Path to Industry Certification, Career and Technical Education, and School Efficiency Reviews), Governor's Partnership for Achieving Successful Schools (PASS), Commission to Review, Study, and Reform Educational Leadership, and High School Reform.

Clarke Family Papers, 1854-1890

Abstract Or Scope

Papers, 1854-1890, of the Clarke family of Gloucester County and Richmond, Virginia, consisting mainly of personal correspondence between Colin Clarke (1792-1865) of Gloucester County and Maxwell Troax Clarke (1830-1911) of Richmond, Virginia, discussing business and personal matters. Most of the correspondence discusses conditions in Gloucester County during the Civil War, especially the departure of slaves and the hardships of military occupation. The collection also includes correspondence to and from Mary Goode Lyle Clarke (1801-1884), Colin Douglas Clarke (1832-1862), Elizabeth Berkeley Cooke Clarke (1833-1906), Powhatan Clarke (1837-1917), Ellen Scott Clarke (1830-1908), and Sally Bland Clarke Manning (b. 1828). The collection also includes Maxwell T. Clarke's Civil War reminiscences, genealogical notes of the Clarke family, recipes, memorandums, certificates, commissions, oaths, military records, drafts, powers of attorney, receipts, lists, and accounts.

The Papers of Louisa May Alcott consists of literary manuscripts, correspondence, legal documents, photographs, and other miscellaneous items. Correspondence discusses her literary career, the writing and publication of her novels and short stories, her family, friends, financial affairs, her health and physicians, and her social life. In addition, there are references to the Concord School of Philosophy, and the career of artist Abigail May Alcott.
