Abstract Or Scope

Highlights of this collection include material concerning the Washington and Lee Journalism Department, including course material, student papers, and lecture notes. Supplementing this course material are published materials on the history of film, 20th century war propaganda, the Nazification of Germany, Paris in the 1920's and the "Lost Generation." There also includes wide selections of personal research materials for projects such as Riegel's books Mobilizing for Chaos and Crown of Glory; collections on Riegel's travels to Central and South America and Europe including Germany during the 1930s, and the typescript of his unpublished autobigraphy to 1945 titled "Hacking It."

Wooldridge of Suffolk, Virginia, consisting of articles, Bible records, books, brochures, census records, correspondence, court records, death records, deeds, ephemera, genealogical notes, interviews, marriage records, military records, obituaries, pamphlets, photographs, wills, and other papers compiled by Laurence B. Gardiner (1906-1994) and Wooldridge chronicling the genealogy of the descendants of John Wooldridge (ca. 1678-1757) of Henrico and Chesterfield Counties, Virginia. Collection includes books written by various members of the Wooldridge family on various topics, including William C. Wooldridge's The Wooldridge Family (2 volumes), and ephemera relating to members of the Wooldridge family and their business interests.

Contains files which document the functions of the Virginia Liaison Office (VLO) in Washington, D.C. Also included are briefing packets from all meetings of the National Governors' Association attended by Governor Allen and/or members of the Liaison Office.

Types of records include officer service records, discharge orders, special orders, summary courts martial records, officer resignations, officer efficiency reports, retirements, payrolls, monthly drill reports, investigations, reports of training, inspections, reports of armory break-in & fires, state military reservation material, aid to civil authority, unit files, and other miscellaneous records. Includes files relating to the 1st Infantry Regiment, 29th Tank Company, 54th Field Artillery, 104th Medical Regiment, 111th Field Artillery, 116th Infantry, 246th Coast Artillery, and 415th Coast Artillery.

First Virginia Council of Defense; XIII. Virginia Agricultural Council of Safety; XIV. Second Virginia Council of Defense; XV. Margaret Ethel Kelley Kern Papers; XVI. H.R. McIlwaine Papers; XVII. Miscellaneous Records; XVIII. Lynchburg City Committee Records; and XIX. Prince Edward County Committee Records. These records include books, broadsides, checks, citations, correspondence, diaries, invitations, invoices, magazines, maps, military records, minute books, newspapers, newspaper clippings, photographs, post cards, press releases, programs, publications, questionnaires, receipts, reports, scrapbooks, sheet music, song books, and telegrams. These records document Virginia's participation in World War I and its attempt to preserve records of that participation.
