Chiefly case files from Compton's tenure as a justice (1974-2000)and a senior justice (2000-2006) on the Supreme Court of Virginia. Also contains files, mainly memos and correspondence, documenting Compton's administrative work for the court overseeing building issues, 1974-1999; the Virginia State Law Library and efforts to establish a Supreme Court of Virginia Historical Society, 1982-2002 (bulk 1996-2002), foreign attorney applications, 1974-1986, and information about U.S. Supreme Court rulings on reciprocity and bar admissions; corrections to Virginia and Southeast Reports, 1977-1982; and a House of Delegates Sub-Committee Study of Appellate Review of Civil Cases (HJR 329), 1989-1990.

The Justice Richard H. Poff Papers, 1972-2002; 2011,are chiefly case files from Poff's tenure as a justice on the Supreme Court of Virginia (1972-1988). The collection also contains Justice Poff's correspondence, 1973-2002, and speeches, 1973-1988.

The Stephenson papers are comprised mostly of Justice Stephenson's case files and opinions, correspondence, and other papers documenting his tenure as a justice on the Supreme Court of Virginia, 1981-2010. The papers also include correspondence and opinions, 1973-1978, documenting his work as a judge on the 25th judicial circuit in Alleghany County, as well as personal papers, 1954-2011, circa. The collection also contains personal and professional papers of Justice Stephenson's father, Roscoe Stephenson, Sr., 1904-1929; and the military discharge record of his grandfather, Oscar Adam Stephenson, 1865.

Papers, 1981-2011, of Leroy R. Hassell (b. 1955) relating to work in private practice, his work as a member and chairman of the City of Richmond School Board, and his tenure as justice and chief justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia. The collection includes case files, correspondence, subject files, and speeches. Case files, conference notes, and confidential correspondence are closed until 2031.

The List of Attorneys Practicing in the Court of Appeals, 1869-1978, is a register of signatures of attorneys qualifying to practice in the Supreme Court of Virginia. Most entries include the date the year the oath was taken and the lawyer's residence (town, courthouse, county, or city). Beginning in 1907, each entry includes the date the attorney qualified.

Oral history interview of Allen L. Lucy by Cassandra Newby-Alexander, Professor of History, Norfolk State University, at Gloucester House, Gloucester Virginia, June 11, 2009; transcript available. In the interview, Lucy talks about his parents and siblings, growing up in the Barton Heights neighborhood of Richmond in the 1920s and 1930s, meeting his wife, and starting a family. He discusses his education in Richmond public schools, looking for work in Richmond during the Depression, and finding work at the City of Richmond Law and Equity Courts in 1935. He reflects on the atmosphere among the staff working at the Supreme Court of Virginia during the 1950s, when the court was deliberating a large number of civil rights cases, and discusses his thoughts about segregation and integration and his interactions with attorneys on both sides of the issue. He recalls one evening when he worked until the early hours of the morning in order to record a large number of petitions filed by civil rights attorney Oliver Hill. Toward the end of the interview, Lucy talks about the nature of his work as deputy clerk and clerk, his relationships with justices, and the pressures, for both the justices and the staff, of managing the caseload of the court and meeting deadlines. He emphasizes the sense of pride and gratitude he felt for having had the opportunity to work for the court and with the justices.
