Special Collections includes manuscript collections, rare books, and the University Archives, as well as state, local and historical maps and photographs. Born in 1952 in Gdynia, Poland, Maria von der Weppen studied in Poland and Norway before beginning her career in Germany. She specialized in reconstructing buildings in East Germany damaged by the war as well as new residential and office construction. This collection consist of drawings, project records, photographs, and articles relating to von der Weppen's work.

The Virginia Cooperative Extension Service Photographs, RG 26/2b, contains approximately 5,000 photographs of activities of the Agricultural Extension Service from 1937 thru 1966, primarily in the 1950s. Photographs depict 4-H activities, home demonstration work, food, breeding, field stations, gardening, poultry, dairy, and other subjects. The Extension Division, which was established in 1966, became the Virginia Cooperative Extension and Agricultural Experiment Station Division in 1995, often shortened to the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE).

This collection consists primarily of correspondence and records of Leslie F. Malpass, Alfred Krebs, and Donald C. Darnton from the Office of Academic Affairs at Virginia Tech. The bulk is from Malpass' tenure as Vice-President for Academic Affairs (1968-1974), but there also are materials from Alfred H. Krebs' tenure as director of Summer School (1970-1972) and as Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs under Malpass (1972-1974) and from Donald C. Darnton's tenure as Director of Special Programs, which also was under the Office of Academic Affairs. There are also materials from Alfred H. Krebs' tenure as acting Vice President for Academic Affairs from August 1974 when Dr. Malpass left until John D. Wilson assumed the post in September 1975.
