This collection contains one National Hospital Day Scrapbook from the Waynesboro Community Hospital. This scrapbook was compiled by the staff of the Waynesboro Community Hospital documenting its community outreach as part of National Hospital Day. It consists of fifty leaves with a blend of ephemeral clippings, correspondence, and original photography. Included are eight original photographs as well as illustrated seals, brochures, buttons, a menu, and clippings among other material. The photographs document staff, auxiliary leaders, and window views including then state of the art blood transfusion equipment. Correspondence from the hospital's director A. Edward Hudson, to the head of the Grace Hospital in Richmond, Va. O.K. Fike (the original recipient of this scrapbook), highlights in detail the planning of promotional material, and the success of these Hospital Day efforts in gaining public trust and interest in the hospital services, especially blood collection.

This collection contains an account ledger of W.B. Gilmer from the farm Woodbourne in Louisa County, Virginia. The farm was noted as being near the Louisa courthouse.The account details poultry activities as well as some general farm inventory. There some sixty pages of entries.

This collection contains five account books (1842-1886) of Dr. W. B. Pendleton. These ledgers list patient names, medications, procedures, amounts charged and dates. Assorted business papers and a fragment of a speech (ca. 1905), removed from the ledgers, are located in a file folder.

This collection contains fifteen prints of drawings created by Dr. W. Dexter Whitehead, a professor of physics at the University of Virginia from 1956-1992. The drawings depict the following views and locations around Grounds, and are titled accordingly: Lawn Room, Steps at Pavilion IX, Pavilion IX Entrance Detail, Dome Room - The Rotunda, Levering Hall, Steps Behind Pavilion VIII, West Rotunda Arch, Pavilion III, Arcade Fan Windows, East Rotunda Arch, Pavilion VI, Pavilion IX - Entrance, Rotunda Fan Window, Dome Room - The Rotunda, and Fan Windows. Each print is signed by Whitehead in the bottom right corner.

This collection consists of four letters from Thomas Mayburry, manager of the Etna Furnace, Pattonsburg, Botetourt County, Virginia, to his partner William Weaver(1780-1863) a merchant of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who became one of the most prominent and successful ironmasters in the Valley of Virginia. These letters complement the Weaver-Brady Papers which contain eighty volumes of the Weaver-Brady Iron Works and Grist MillRecords, 1825-1878, and other financial papers. This correspondence was apparently written about seven years before Weaver came to Virginiato supervise his Iron Works directly.

This collection consists of twenty-seven items, 1819-1831, electrostatic copies of letters and documents pertaining to the legal cases of William Weaverversus John Doyleand T[homas ?] Mayburryheard in the Rockbridgeand Augusta Countycourts. These items were placed in the Library by Charles Dew, Fellow of the Carter G. Woodson Institute, University of Virginia, on June 18, 1990, who believes the originals have been stolen and these copies constitute the only surviving record.

This collection contains a mimeographed typescript of W.E.B. Du Bois's opening address at the Conference of the Encyclopedia of Africa held at the University of Ghana in Accra in 1962. Du Bois dreamed of editing an 'Encyclopedia Africana'. He envisioned a comprehensive compendium of 'scientific' knowledge about the history, culture, and social institutions of people of African descent. He argues for his project of an Encyclopedia Africana based in Africa and compiled by Africans. He notes that it is long overdue but that "such a work had to wait for independent Africans to carry it out." He acknowledges the excellence of the Presence Africaine (founded in 1947), which "has already brought to light much material written in the French language," and sees the project as a "living effort which will grow and change -- which will expand through the years as more and more material is gathered from all parts of Africa." Furthermore, he hopes that the project would dispense with divisive colonial distinctions such as "British," "French," "Black," or "Islamic" Africa and consider the continent as a whole.

This addition to MSS 7206 Wendell Phillips papers is a single undated letter from Wendell Phillips (1811-1884), an attorney and abolitionist, concerning a speaking engagement on "Tousssaint L'Ouverture, the hero of Hayti" in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

This collection documents the first-year experience of Wendy Martin, a student-athlete at the University of Virginia, class of 1991. The collection contains brochures, schedules, and correspondence collected by Martin, including materials sent to incoming first-year students, student activities brochures, materials from housing, honor code documents, and materials related to Track and Field, including correspondence, schedules, and brochures. It also includes her application for admission to UVA.
