Primary Collecting Areas:
One of the library’s missions is collecting and preserving printed, manuscript, photographic, cartographic and genealogical documentation of Leesburg, Loudoun County and the surrounding region. The library actively seeks and welcomes donations of original business records, diaries, correspondence and photographs documenting life, culture, and history of Leesburg and Loudoun County. Library collections include over thirty-two thousand books and periodicals, maps, visual collections, newspapers, government records, and manuscripts. The library offers lectures on history and genealogy, classes, and exhibits. Group tours and orientations are available on request and books about local history are available for purchase on-site. Description:
Thomas Balch Library is a history and genealogy library owned and operated by the Town of Leesburg. Collections focus on Loudoun County, regional and Virginia history, genealogy, military history with special emphasis on the American Civil War, and ethnic history. It is designated as an Underground Railroad research site.

The Leesburg Confederate Monument Collection consists of assorted memorabilia and research regarding the memorial, including a photocopied photograph and copyright of the monument, a timeline of its construction, a biographical sketch of Frederick William Sievers, a photocopied program from its unveiling ceremony, various newspaper articles describing the event, and a photocopied postcard of the monument sent to the sculptor's daughter, Lillian Gladys Sievers (1916-2002).

Leesburg Confederate Monument Collection 1901-1908

John Fletcher Railroad Memorabilia Collection 1896; 1908-1921; n.d.

Abstract Or Scope
This collection consists of timetables and other documents relating to various railroads in the DC area of Northern Virginia. Some documents are originals and others are photocopies of originals. Timetables for the railways include those for the Falls Church Division of the Washington-Virginia Railway Company, the Bluemont Division of the Washington & Old Dominion Railway, the Great Falls Division of the Washington & Old Dominion Railway, the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad Company, and the Washington, Arlington & Falls Church Electric Railway Company. With the exception of one, the source of which is unclear, the photographs are photocopies from Herbert H. Harwood's Rails to the Blue Ridge: The Washington and Old Dominion Railroad 1847-1968. Other documents include a hand-drawn map showing the path of the W&OD through Ashburn during the late-nineteenth century, an illustration of "Early Trains of America," a photocopy of the cover of an official map of Washington published by the Estey Organ Company, and an Information/Travel brochure from the Standard Guide Information Office in Washington.

Town of Hamilton Town Council Meeting Minutes 1875-1960

Abstract Or Scope
This collection consists of transcribed minutes of the Town of Hamilton's town council meetings on three cds and printouts. The minutes are dated between 1875 and 1960 with a gap between 1898 and 1921. Topics of the minutes include maintenance of roads and sidewalks, ordinances dealing with farm animals and their maintenance, permits (building and traveling festivals), sanitation, finances, and services (water, trash removal). The transcription also includes information on the specific information about council meetings such as attendance records, locations and resignations.

News Publishing Company Collection 1933-1934

Abstract Or Scope
The News Publishing Company Collection consists of issues of The News from 1933 to 1934, as well as a subscription card, letter regarding fundraising from the Friends Meeting of Washington, D.C., and a bulletin to the Lincoln Monthly Meeting of Friends discussing spiritual development. The news articles include discussion of plays and other events at Lincoln High School, sermons at the Friends Meetings, recipes, and handmade drawings of local activities. These issues were kept by subscribers Franklin P. (1857-1946) and Elizabeth H. (n.d.-1948) Wilson, who had spent much of their early lives in Loudoun County. A letter to Mrs. Wilson is also included, explaining that the student paper will not be continued during summer vacation.
