This collection includes prints pertaining to West Virginia and the surrounding area. Many have been taken out of publications. Subjects include the U.S. Civil War; various WV cities, landscapes, and geographical features; and various local industries.

Collection includes typescripts, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. Highlights include mimeographed statements relating to the Sigma Nu Foundation of West Virginia, Inc.; the inauguration of Dr. Irvin Stewart as president of West Virginia University; West Virginia authors; and the University budget. Also included are twelve typescripts of letters written from St. Petersburg, Russia, by a representative of the Ross Winans' Locomotive Works, Baltimore, Maryland (1859-1862).

Mock-up of illustrations for the book "Flora of West Virginia, Second Edition" by Earl L. Core and P.D. Strausbaugh. The mock-up shows a rough draft of what the illustrated pages of the book would look like when published. Mock-up is composed of black and white botanical illustrations on pieces of illustration board (11 in. x 16 in.). The mock-ups show the layout of text and illustrations with notes and corrections. Also contains mock-ups and other material regarding the book's cover illustrations. See "Historical Note" and "Scope and Content Note" for further information.

Legal papers of a Morgantown lawyer, partner of United States Senator Waitman T. Willey, prosecuting attorney of Monongalia County, state senator, and judge of the Eleventh Circuit Court. Included are papers which relate to Bunker's Civil War service and Willey's legal practice. There are a few items of correspondence on land speculation and immigration in post-Civil War West Virginia.

Papers of West Virginia University History Professor Edward M. Steel. Dr. Steel was a professor of history at West Virginia University, specializing in American history. As an author he is best known for his scholarly writings on labor leader Mother Jones. The collection includes correspondence (personal and professional), manuscripts of books and articles regarding "Mother Jones" and other historical topics, bibliographies, research notes, topographical maps of northern West Virginia, clippings, greetings cards, and other material. See also A&M 3582 for a paper authored by Steel entitled "Black Monongalians, A Judicial View of Slavery and the Negro in Monongalia County, 1776-1865"; also see collections A&M 2031 and A&M 3339 for additional Steel papers. This collection is minimally processed.

Civil War history book titled "A Great Civil War Has Come Upon Us - The Lives and Times of Union Brig. Gen./Reverend Joseph A.J. Lightburn and His Friend, Confederate Lieut. Gen. Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson: A Two-Volume Presentation in Observance of the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War". The book contains a biography of General Joseph A.J. Lightburn; a biography of "Stonewall" Jackson; accounts of major battles and campaigns in the Civil War; and an account of the formation of the state of West Virginia. The author, Frances Lightburn Cressman, is the great-granddaughter of General Lightburn. Also includes digital files of the book.

Gibson Lamb Cranmer Papers regarding Statehood and Other Material, 1787/1895, bulk 1822/1881 0.4 Linear Feet 5 in. (2 document cases, 2 1/2 in. each)

Papers regarding West Virginia statehood and the history of Wheeling and Ohio County compiled by Judge Gibson L. Cranmer (1826-1903) of Wheeling, West Virginia, who served as secretary of the Wheeling Convention that repudiated Virginia's secession from the United States in 1861. Series 1 includes manuscript narratives and correspondence describing events of the West Virginia statehood movement, written by eyewitnesses at the request of Gibson L. Cranmer. Manuscript authors include John S. Burdett, John S. Carlile, Daniel Frost, Lewis Ruffner, and Benjamin Wilson. Series 2 includes Cranmer's handwritten notes, drafts of articles, copies of documents, and letters solicited by him regarding the history of Wheeling and Ohio County, West Virginia.
