Scrapbook probably kept by Lyon G. Tyler. Contains newspaper clippings which concern politics especially the campaign of Fitzhugh Lee for governor of Virginia, the General Assembly of Virginia from December 1887-March 1888 as well as clippings concerning the College of William and Mary.

Contains a letter from Archibald McClean to Charles S. Morgan regarding the 1830 Virginia Convention in Richmond, Virginia. In the letter, McClean talked about giving more representation in Virginia to the majority of residents instead of an oligarchy of the elite class. He ended his letter referring to Andrew Jackson, president of the United States, as a "plain, unostentatious republican in manners and quite accessible. But I could not receive the impression that he is a great man."

Correspondence, 1833-1855, of members of the Ayres family including John W. Ayres at Chillicothe and Cincinnati, Ohio; and Fort Madison and Agency City, Iowa (with his father John B. Ayres at Diana Mills, Buckingham County, Va.), Robert H. Ayres, Hillsboro, Ohio and Jackson, Tenn. (with John B. Ayres, Matthias L. Ayres and Suckie Ayres) and Nathan W. Ayres (with Matthias L. Ayres and William Ford & Co., Richmond, Va. Letters concern the Methodist Church, abolitionists, politics, Thomsonian medicine; and passing the examination to be admitted to practice law in Iowa.

Papers, 1780-1929, of the Brown, Coalter, Tucker families including the papers of John Coalter (1769-1838), Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia, and John Thompson Brown (1802-1836), member of the Virginia House of Delegates.

The collection includes: correspondence and land records of Robert "King" Carter; correspondence and land records of his sons Robert Carter (1704-1731) and Landon Carter (1710-1778); correspondence, accounts, land records and the appointment to the Virginia Council of Robert Carter (1728-1804), son of Robert Carter (1704-1731); correspondence, diaries, land records and accounts of Robert Wormeley Carter (1734-1804), son of Landon Carter of Sabine Hall; and correspondence and land records and papers concerning the estate of Robert Carter's grandson, Landon Carter (1757-1820).

Papers (including business and personal correspondence and accounts), chiefly 1867-1893, of Charles T. O'Ferrall, member of the Democratic Party, lawyer, judge, Congressman and governor. His papers include a daybook, 1865-1866, of the American Hotel, Staunton, Va.; his fee book, 1869-1873; and papers concerning legal cases. Collection includes letters, 11 December 1868-18 February 1869 and 1877, of O'Ferrall's first wife, Annie McLain Hand O'Ferrall ; his brothers, R.H. O'Ferrall, and I. Frank O'Ferrall, and his cousin, F. K. O'Ferrall.

Papers, ca. 1853-1878 of Portsmouth, Virginia attorney, judge and politician C.W. Murdaugh, consisting of 3 volumes of law notes, notes on politics and history, transcribed stories, poemd and anecdotes, etc. and clippings from papers and magazines, some of which are annotated.

Letter from Daniel Webster, Washington, D.C. to Norton Quincy Tirrell, Fortress Monroe, Old Point Comfort, Virginia, stating that since he has not made any selection, he will comply with Tirrell's wishes and forward Tirrell's letter to Dr. Sewall. Norton Quincy Tirrell is the great-great-great-grandfather of donor, Mrs. Page Clagget.

An eight page letter with envelope from George G. York, a senior corporal stationed at Camp Alger, to his wife and child. York writes about a visit to the camp by President McKinley, the moral of the soldiers, his experience with military rations, and his thoughts on the Spanish-American war.

Manuscript draft, dated October 30, 1864, written by Henry Ward Beecher comparing Abraham Lincoln to Wendell Phillips, being particularly praiseworthy of Phillips. Typescript included.
