The Gregory Family papers follow the family of Virginia Governor John Munford Gregory and wife Amanda Wallace through three generations with letters dating from the 1820's to the 1920's. Most items are letters between family members and grant insight into the daily activities and concerns of the Gregory family. The collection also includes correspondence between members of the Gregory family and other acquaintances, including members of the John Tyler family. While most letters are of a personal nature, some also touch on the issues of politics, education, religion, and agriculture. The collection is rich in genealogical information on the Gregory family and related Croshaw, Graves, West, and White families, as well as history of the family's war involvement. In addition to letters, the collection includes newspaper articles, family documents, and two diaries kept by John M. Gregory's daughter, Mattie Galbraith, in the late 1870's. There are also seven cased images of members of the Gregory Family, including Amanda Wallace Gregory, Amanda's sister (Elizabeth Christie Powell), William Wallace Gregory, and Mary "Mollie" Gregory.

The collection contains papers of various members of the Grigsby family, particulary Hugh Blair Grigsby who was a historian and Chancellor of The College of William and Mary and his son, Hugh Carrington Grigsby who lived his entire life at the family farm, Edgehill, in Charlotte County, Virginia.

This list was likely compiled by the law firm established by Senator Robert Opie Norris, Jr. around 1904, or its successor firm, Clarke and Clarke. The list has notes next to some names providing alternate spellings, and in the case of the Beverly family from Amherst, a longer statement about the methods they used to "evade the situation." The full official title typed on the document reads, "Surname, By Counties and Cities, of Mixed Negroid Virginia Families Striving to Pass as ""Indian"" or White."

Journal, compiled by Lucy Elizabeth James in 1959, titled "Four Score Years, 1880-1960," in which the author shares memories of the different stations of her life in a "series of random letters and narrations." Includes reminiscences of her childhood in New Kent County, student years in Farmville, years spent in Williamsburg and Newport News, all Virginia. Also included are photographs of the author, from 1880 to the 1950s, and two 1973 obituaries for Robert Welmore James (1901-1973). Includes some narration on student life at the College of William and Mary, where her husband, George B. Wright was a student in the late 1890s.
