The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) houses one of the largest and most significant collections of rare and unique materials of any educational institution of comparable size in the United States. Focused on Virginia history but with nationally and internationally important collections, the Manuscripts Collection includes letters, diaries, journals, scrapbooks, business records, organizational minutes, and other items that provide evidence of events great and small and the daily lives of Americans of all backgrounds. The Rare Books Collection, with volumes dating from the 15th century to the present, is strong in dogs, Virginia-related items, early Virginia family libraries, gardening and natural history, religion, book arts, printing history, travel, science, and medicine. The University Archives documents the history of William & Mary from 1693 to the present, including a wide range of materials from administrative records, student organization records, and alumni papers to photographs, audio-visual materials, and artifacts.

Lucy P. Ruddy's journal is a small one, only covering the period from January 1 - August 3, 1893. The faintly lined pages are unnumbered, except for a few that Lucy numbered at the beginning (pages 1 - 13). She began this journal as a young woman living in late 19th century New England, apparently in or near Lynn, Massachusetts.

Travel diary for Baptist minister and missionary, George Whitefield Bosworth of Portland, Maine. Leather-bound, monogrammed diary consists of detailed accounts of travels through Europe and Africa, with trips down the Nile River and into the Sinai Desert. Also contains contemplation on religious institutions and belief systems, specifically Islam and Roman Catholicism as they pertain to Bosworth's New England Protestantism. Smaller, cover-less journal recounts "a tout through the Desert, Palestine, Syria, Turkey And up to the Danube."

Sarah M. Mead's journal is a small, leather bound book, approximately 4" X 6.5" (10 cm X 16 cm) in size. It consists of 138 unnumbered pages. According to the first page, she began it on July 15, 1850, when she was "Age - 12 years," living in Penn Yan, New York.1 She notes very early her attendance at "Mrs. N. M. Hubbell's school." Later, she says she is going to "Miss Mary Drakes [sic] school."
