Mercer Family
A family history and genealogical record of the Mercer family of Monongalia County, WV with mention of the allied families of Brown and Campbell. Robert Mercer was the first of the family to settle in what is now West Virginia near Morgantown in 1766. He was the son of Gideon Mercer and the grandson of John Mercer, the earliest known family member in America. John Mercer was a Quaker merchant of New York City and an extensive landowner of Manhattan Island. Also noted is the movement and settlement of the family, particularly of the line of Robert Mercer's son Joseph, into Pennsylvania and Ohio. Noted are the frontier activities of Joseph Mercer's children: Phoebe and Nottingham, the latter being a veteran of the War of 1812. Two sons of Phoebe, Henry Marshall Campbell and James Campbell, served in the PA 46th Volunteer Infantry, Company F during the Civil War with James being killed in Virginia at the battle of Cedar Mountain. Material covers the years 1766-1933.

The first list pertains to the company of Captain Christopher I. Beirne in May 1861; the second list pertains to the company of Captain Fielding Fleshman in May or June 1861.

Corse's military career, including muster rolls, commission and discharge certificates, and 63 letters written by Corse to his wife, Elizabeth Beverley Corse, during his participation in the Civil War. In addition, the papers of Midshipman William H. Peters and a few letters written by Mrs. Corse are included.

Materials Collected by Mrs. Louise Morris, genealogist and authority on local history. The collection includes a notebook kept by J. H. Wherry, a student at Jefferson College, Pa., in 1859; a genealogy of the DeVaul, Haun, [F]ast families of Marion and Monongalia counties, 1817-1957; an essay on "Immigration" by George Whitham, 1896, favoring immigration restriction because of the increased number coming from " the Latin races of southeastern Europe;" land surveys from dead books, 1827-1933, mostly in Monongalia County: and a scrapbook of pictures, early 20th century, including WVU buildings (Martin Hall, the old library, The Drill Field area), Raven Rocks at Uffington, the Cheat River and Cooper's Rocks, Cascades on Deckers Creek, Oak Park near Masontown, White Rocks in Marion County in 1912, and numerous unidentified people.
