Paul Ayres Rockwell papers

12 Linear Feet
Abstract Or Scope

The Paul Ayres Rockwell Papers consists primarily of Rockwell's personal archive and research collection on the history of the French and American volunteer air combat corps, the "Lafayette Escadrille," and the American volunteers of the French Foreign Legion during the First World War. Highlights of this collection include the war period letters to Paul Rockwell from various pilots and related officials of the Lafayette Escadrille, members of the French Foreign Legion and the letters of his brother, the famous American combat aviator Kiffin Yates Rockwell and his mother Loula Rockwell. Another important feature of this collection is the large assortment of related original photographs taken by Paul Rockwell during the war while documenting his and his brother's experiences in the field. The photographic holdings also include a substantial cache of collected imagery relative to the key subjects. After the First World War, as Lafayette Escadrille historian, Paul Rockwell continued to expand upon the archive to include content related to the lives of the veterans, unit reunions, memorials, reminiscences through about 1980. Lastly, the collection is rich with primary and secondary resources pertaining to Rockwell family genealogy, Paul Rockwell's biographical history, and general history of both world wars.

"What happened, reader, where you are? What happens there today? asks the artists' book Site. Inspired by her discovery of a slave auction block on the first morning in her new town of Charlottesville, VA, Lyall Harris grapples with US history in a project where content is revealed and supported through its material components. With assistance from papermaker Dieu Donné, Harris created a watermark broadside, the key component of an artists' book that both points to the past and brings the reader into an awareness of present"--Vamp & Tramp, Booksellers website.

The cave protection act of 2013.

Abstract Or Scope
"'The cave protection act of 2013' explores the meaning we insert into situations where direction in the form of signifiers is missing. The idea for the project came from a documentary about Centralia, Pennsylvania. This mining town was destroyed when an underground fire broke out, creating sinkholes and sucking the town into the earth. I reference these events in the text ... I respond to how Centralia developed a strong identity because of its erasure ... I worked from the text of 'The Federal Cave Protection Act of 1988', an oddly poetic bureaucratic document created to give sanctuary to bits of earth no longer present ... The piece's aesthetic echoes that of government documents in its tabbed pages, hierarchical information organization, and machine generated illustration"--Artist's statement at the Vamp & Tramp Booksellers' website, viewed on April 22, 2015.

ARVAS is an aggregator of archival resources. ARVAS does not have control of the descriptive language used in our members’ finding aids.

Finding aids may contain historical terms and phrases, reflecting the shared attitudes and values of the community from which they were collected, but are offensive to modern readers. These include demeaning and dehumanizing references to race, ethnicity, and nationality; enslaved or free status; physical or mental ability; religion; sex; and sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many institutions and organizations are in the process of reviewing and revising their descriptive language, with the intent to describe materials in more humanizing, inclusive, and harm-reductive ways. As members revise their descriptive language, their changes will eventually be reflected in their ARVAS finding aids.
