Description:
Special Collections and Archives at James Branch Cabell Library collects rare and unique research materials documenting 20th and 21st century Richmond and Central Virginia. Our holdings include manuscripts, personal papers, photograph collections, oral histories, and various institutional records. Books and other published materials include nationally significant special collections of book art and comic arts; rare books and periodicals; late 19th and early 20th-century architecture and decorative arts; and Richmond history, imprints, literature and serial publications from the late 20th century to the present. The historical records of VCU and its Monroe Park Campus predecessor, the Richmond Professional Institute, are found here as well.

Harris H. Stilson Richmond film collection, 1929/1933

This collection includes 12 films taken by Harris Stilson between 1929 and 1931, which provide a unique glimpse into the everyday life of Black and white residents of Richmond and Virginia during that time. The film collection documents a variety of places and events in and around Richmond and the Virginia coastal area, including Deltaville and Buckroe Beach. Highlights of the collection include bustling city street scenes, streetcars, and buildings; animals and circus acts at state fairs; farming in rural Virginia; leisure activities at local parks and beaches, among them Richmond's Byrd Park and Shields Lake; and footage of a silent film starring Thomas Edwin "Tom" Mix, considered one of Hollywood's first Western movie stars, shot in a local theater.

The bulk of the collection dates from the late 1970s through the early 1990s and focuses on Mrs. McClenahan's involvement on issues of race, housing, historic preservation, and Richmond revitalization.

The VCU Libraries Richmond Subject Files, 1970-2010 consist of approximately 140 files of printed material and ephemera produced by businesses, organizations, and people in Richmond, Virginia. Materials in the files were collected and organized by Special Collections and Archives staff over the course of four decades to document the history and cultural life of the city. The collection contains newspaper and magazine clippings in addition to promotional materials such as advertising fliers, brochures, and mailers for businesses, organizations, and events. A significant portion of the collection consists of VCU undergraduate student papers from the early 1990s on the architectural history of buildings and residences surrounding the university.
