Bound manuscript notebook belonging to Reverend John Spotts (1784-1838). The notebook includes manuscript notes by Rev. Spotts recording the subjects of sermons he gave in various settlements, baptisms, his notes on the Ten Commandments, notes on intemperance, and a 6 page list of names of subscribers to the building of the Big Levels Baptist Church of Christ (today known as Mount Tabor Baptist Church) to be built in Lewisburg, WV. Additional information about the church, and some information about Spotts, can be found on the church's National Register of Historic Places Inventory -- Nomination Form (filed with the collection).

Includes correspondence, daily journals, clipping scrapbooks, military records, genealogical and autobiographical notes, and printed materials. The papers regard the activities of Company B of the 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVI) and Company G of the 36th OVI. There are also papers of Palmer's wife, Saida Scott, who taught music. Papers of John and Lewis Stuart, 1785-1823, and of Samuel Price, 1830-1879. Price's papers include mainly legal and business correspondence related to Price's law practice in Lewisburg, West Virginia. The Stuart papers concern settlement in Greenbrier County, land transactions, and family matters. The collection includes lawyer's fee books and account books for general merchandise, ca.1830-1880. There are also printed booklets of court briefs, pamphlets concerning "the slavery question" and railroads, and several Congressional documents.

Thomas Creigh, a Greenbrier County pioneer and land speculator, was a long-time Lewisburg merchant. Born 1766 in Ireland, he emigrated to Greenbrier Co. in the 1790s and became a relative through marriage of Col. John Stuart, a local prominent citizen. This ledger documents the trading activity of his general store and it is especially reflective of the bartering system which characterized much of the nineteenth century rural economy. Included in the front of the volume is an index of customers which lists many noted Lewisburg residents, such as John Stuart and Samuel Price.
