Two manuscript volumes containing surveyors' field notes for Harrison County, and copies of Monongalia County surveys, compiled by members of the Haymond family. These notes also contain: information concerning acreage cleared, location and type of construction of the homes of some early residents of Harrison County; dates of patents and names of those persons to whom patents were issued; street courses and survey of the corporation of Clarksburg, 1835; and names of members of a survey party, wages paid, miscellaneous expenses, and camp locations.

Photostats of deeds, surveys, plats, and grants, the latter signed by Thomas M. Randolph, David Campbell, and William Smith, governors of Virginia, in 1820, 1838, and 1847, for land in Harrison and Doddridge counties; a school attendance sheet for 1865; and a report to the board of education of the number of school-age children in District 4 of Doddridge County in 1869. Also included are a number of photographs taken around Webster Springs showing the hotel, a subscription school, and public school classes, ca.1900, along with two photographs of lumbering activities near Holly River. There is also a typescript, "An Adventure of Two Years in Webster Springs High School, 1915-1917," by Maud M. Hull; and a short history of the Webster Hardwood Lumber Company at Dixie.

Papers of the Preston, Davis, Rand, and Arnold families, ca. 1817-1924. Includes letters of John W. Davis, sermons of David R. Preston, pamphlets dealing with the important political and religious issues of the period, and copies of speeches delivered by John W. Davis, Waitman T. Willey, and other congressmen on national political issues. There are also newspapers and newspaper clippings related to the political career of John W. Davis and some Davis family photographs.

Papers of Mrs. O.W. Ladwig of Clarksburg and Wilsonburg, Harrison County, West Virginia. She was president of the Clarksburg Women's Club, 1931-1932, and this collection consists of letters and materials addressed to Mrs. Ladwig. Subjects include the West Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs, the National Council of Women of the U.S., Inc., the George Washington Bicentennial Committee, the CLUBWOMAN, Federated Garden Clubs of West Virginia, the General Federation of Women's Clubs, Chicago Exposition of 1933, the World Court, and the International Disarmament Conference, 1932.

Photograph album of scenes in the area of Harrison County, West Virginia. Subjects include Lauverna Louise Thomey Wood and her father John Thomey; outdoor scenes from Salem, WV, including flood and fire damage; oil and coal industries; and mills and farms.

Glass plate negatives of a Harrison County photographer Bruce Washburn who lived in Good Hope on Midway Road, Harrison County. Some images are identified, most are not. Identified locations include Jane Lew in Lewis County; and West Milford and Lost Creek in Harrison County. There are many images documenting the timber industry (perhaps in Webster County), including a sawmill; and fewer images documenting oil and gas activity, and agricultural work. There are also photographs showing a baseball team, one room school, train depot, and the Webster Springs Hotel, among other types of pictures. Especially noteworthy is a photograph of the frontier cabin of Colonel William Lowther (1742-1814) showing the condition of his log home, dating from the late 1700s, in 1908. This collection was found in the 1980s in the wall of a house in Good Hope, West Virginia that had been owned by Bruce Washburn. Robert E. Nichols acquired them, identified some of them, preserved them, and gave them to his son Ken Nichols. Robert Nichols grew up in West Milford, and raised a family in Bridgeport.

Papers of Thomas Tavenner and the Tavenner family of western Virginia, including correspondence; memoirs; journals; financial and legal documents; pamphlets; newspapers; and other material. Much of the material in this collection regards the Civil War. The Tavenner family were Confederate sympathizers.
