Records documenting the enlistment of men into the Union Army in Harrison County, West Virginia. Some of the records are written on official stationery (mainly from the Chief Mustering and Disbursing Office or the Provost Marshal's Office) and others are handwritten. Some of the records indicate that the man who enlisted was serving as a substitute for another individual. Records include dates of enlistment, names of enlisted men and recruiting officers, and value of payments made upon enlistment.

Coal Mining Disaster Reports Collection 1.7 Linear Feet Summary: 1 ft. 8 in. (1 record carton, 15 in.); (1 document case, 5 in.)

Mine disaster reports, official hearing reports, and hearing and inquest transcripts (1938-1967). Most of the mine disaster reports were created by inspectors from the West Virginia Department of Mines, and some of them involved federal inspectors. Other reports were created by the United States Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia Department of Mines Coal Mine Safety Board of Review. Also includes volumes 3 through 8 of the Decisions of the Interior Board of Mine Operations Appeals (1974-1977). The main part of this collection is comprised of obituaries clipped from Buckhannon, Clarksburg and Parkersburg newspapers, 1926-1939. Also 17 issues of Buckhannon and Clarksburg newspapers, 1917-1938; and the roto section of the Sunday Herald, Boston Mass., Aug 10, 1924 featuring reproductions of Civil War pictures in the Library of Congress, including several concerning WV. Some correspondence of Iva, Corrine, Allene, Mollie and Pearl Cutright, including a few letters from school friends, but mainly concerning D. A. R. activities. Items on the genealogy of the Coffman and Wolfe families, and notes on some early settlers in the vicinity of Buckhannon, including Carney, Westfall and Cutright families. Pamphlets on the 40th anniversary of Oklahoma City; Crossnore School, Crossnore, NC, and a handbook for the Exhibition Buildings of Williamsburg, VA, 1937.

Davis, John J. (John James), 1835-1916

One box of material including original and typescript copies of letters exchanged between Anna Kennedy and J.J. Davis for the period 1860-1862. Also included is material on the Chapin family, Davis and Steen family genealogy and Reed family Bible. Correspondents are J.J. Davis, Anna Kennedy, J.W. Davis, Phineas Chapin, Rev. Asa Brooks, and J. W. Wayland. John W. Davis' certificate of Admission to practice before the Supreme Court of West Virginia dated 1896. His sponsor was Melville Davisson Post and President of the Court was Homer Holt. Also, Davis' commission as a Notary Public dated 1898.

Grubb, Davis, 1919-1980
The Night of the Hunter by Davis Grubb, an autographed copy by the author to the donor which includes sketch drawings and comments by the author. He states that his inspiration for this novel was the Quiet Dell murders of Harry Powers and his own youth spent in Marshall and Harrison Counties, WV. Grubb admits to basing the character of Rachel on a person he knew when young who "was more beautiful than my poor powers can portray."
