Collection contains letter addressed to John Letcher, a former Virginia Governor during the American Civil War, from Jubal A. Early, a former Confederate Major General during the American Civil War. The letter extends an invitation to attend a Southern Historical Society convention as an appointed delegate, a decision made by Jubal A. Early. The convention's purpose was to reorganize the Southern Historical Society after the end of the Civil War.

Two page letter dated February 16, 1862 intended as an inquiry to the Governor of Georgia from the County of Glynn. As representative of the county, Burnet is asking if the officers of the county (the sheriff, clerks of courts, surveyor, and ordinary) will be subject to a draft in order to furnish the number of troops not filled by volunteers in the time that the Governor requested. The sentiment of the officials is that they would rather resign their posts and volunteer then be drafted.

Lizzie Earle Cary Daniel (1848-1915) kept this journal from 1875-1883. She titled it "A Life and its Gleanings." The contents include handwritten poetry, philosophical musings, and newspaper clippings. Many clippings are simply layered between the pages by Daniel. The journal is accompanied by a 1916 "Interrogatory for Listing by Taxpayer and Commissioner of Revenue Tangible and Intangible Personal Property, and Money" form.

William M. Browne Letters to Mary Taylor, 1863

Letters on Confederate States of America Executive Department stationery to Mary Taylor concerning rising rent on the house that Browne is renting from here in Richmond. In the first letter, Browne writes that he must decline to take the house for another year as Taylor has raised the rent and he believes that "$1500 is as much as [he] ought to pay." In the second letter, Browne writes that since Taylor did not reply to his first letter he "concluded that [she] had resolved to allow [him] to retain possession for another year on the same terms." He also writes that he has "literally and faithfully adhered to [his] contract" including " not neglecting the tuning of the Piano, althogh that has scarcely ever been used."
