Aristotle Smith Scrapbook 0.25 Linear Feet 1 clamshell box, 3 in. 0.005 Gigabytes 7 .jpg files

Scrapbook of Aristotle Smith (1863-1911), doctor, lawyer, teacher, and historian. The scrapbook consists of newspaper clippings (1897-1909) and other ephemera glued onto pages of a book, Report on Population and Resources of Alaska (1893) from the 11th census, published in 1890. The scrapbook also includes handwritten text on the book's pages and regards the history of various West Virginia counties: Calhoun, Clay, Braxton, Roane; the genealogy of the Chenowiths, his wife's family; his own Smith family; other families include Stalnaker, Smith, and Westbrook; some diary-like entries detailing the weather, visitors, and reminiscences; and profiles of individuals, some recounting Civil War stories and accounts of settler skirmishes with Native Peoples.

Woofter, Carey.
Folklore of West Virginia collected by Woofter, who was a student of John Harrington Cox and Louis Watson Chappell. The collection consists of a card file of approximately 10,000 folklore items, including superstitions, sayings, riddles, remedies and tales, as well as a pair of unpublished bound volumes entitled FOLKLORE OF WEST VIRGINIA containing folklore and folksongs with musical notation by Woofter's protege Patrick Gainer. While Woofter never published his discoveries, he did supply materials to important publications by John Harrington Cox and Josiah Combs.

Highway maps for the 55 counties of West Virginia created in 1937. They are in two tones (blue on white), in varying dimensions (including items in the range of 36 in. x 36 in. to 36 in. x 58 in., etc.), and scaled to 1 inch equaling 1 mile. Features indicated on the maps include: roads (US, primary state roads, secondary state roads); state, county, district, and corporate lines; railroads; streams; parks and forests; highway bridges; county seats; cities and villages; lodges; farms; houses; businesses; oil and gas wells; commercial airfields; schools; churches; mines; power plants; factories; hotels; and other information.

Family photographs and printed material of Joyce T. Hathaway (b. 1927). The original accession includes prints, photographic postcards, strips of 35 mm negatives, digital images, and printed material. Subjects include people, places, and activities of Calhoun County and the town of Grantsville, West Virginia in the early 1900s (prints and postcards) and the 1940s (prints and 35 mm negatives). An addendum of 2013/10/30 includes printed material, photographs, and glass lantern slides. Subjects of the photographs include Webster Springs, Grantsville, the Calhoun County High School fire, and family portraits. The glass lantern slides include advertisements for films (1927-1935).

West Virginia land records, including receipts for fees paid, surveys, certificates of survey, land patents, grants, correspondence and other material. Some of the records are copies rather than official documents. The records are sorted by the names of buyers and stored in envelopes. Recorded to the fronts of the envelopes is information relevant to their contents.

Louis Reed and Mildred Johnston Papers 0.35 Linear Feet Summary: 4 1/4 in. (2 folders, 2 1/2 in.); (1 reel of microfilm, 1.75 in.)

Reed, Louis. Johnston, Mildred.
Louis Reed (1899-ca. 1985) served in France and Germany during World War I. Collection contains letters he wrote to his future wife, Mildred Johnston. Reed and Johnston married many years later, after the death of Reed's first wife. Reed's letters, written between 1918 and 1920, discuss army life, the front in France, and the occupation of Germany. Collection also contains a 235-page photocopied typescript that Reed wrote about the history of Burning Springs, Wirt County, and its role in the Civil War as a productive oil field. The typescript is also available on microfilm.

This microfilm version of the Thornton Tayloe Perry Collection held by the Virginia Historical Society contains historical material collected by Perry over a 30 year period. It concentrates upon western Virginia and West Virginia with particular emphasis upon the lower Shenandoah Valley and Jefferson, Berkeley, and Morgan counties of West Virginia. The microfilm was placed in the West Virginia Collection by the Virginia Historical Society under provisions of a National Historical Publications and Records Commission grant.

Structural and topographical maps of various locations in West Virginia. Most maps were created by the West Virginia Geological Survey. Counties depicted include Boone, Braxton, Brooke, Calhoun, Clay, Gilmer, Hancock, Lewis, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, Marshall, Mingo, Nicholas, Ohio, Roane, Tyler, Wetzel, and Wirt County. Geological and geographical features depicted include coal, oil, gas, iron ore, and limestone areas; Berea grit/sand and Injun Sand; state roads; railroads; and virgin and cut-over forest areas.

West Virginia University. Extension Program

Records of the WVU Extension Service. Collection includes instructional booklets on cooking, decorating, and sewing from the 1910s to the 1960s, materials on rural electrification in West Virginia in the 1930s, annual conference programs, and materials on incomes and family budgets. Also includes materials relating to the Farm Woman's Club in West Virginia, studies of school children during the 1940s, and studies of cost of living in rural areas during World War II. There are historical sketches of various county extension programs in the state of West Virginia, most of which describe their establishment and growth.
