These records cover two types of meetings, "special," which met on an as needed basis to discuss specific issues; and "regular", which met every two to three weeks. Included are Report of Charter Change Review Committee and Annual Report 1969-70, City of Alexandria. The most common topics are zoning and building. Transportation is another popular issue.

The collection contains reports, correspondence, account books, minutes, warrants, court orders, vouchers, bills to be paid and to be collected, some printed matter, stocks and bonds, petitions, election returns, and poll books, ranging in date from 1750 to 1983, predominately 1825-1875. Topics include both the city auditor and the city treasurer records of receipts and expenditures for many city functions--the poor house, the police, employee pay records, etc.--, election results, the issuance of Corporation stocks and bonds, railroads, and canals.

This collection documents the professional photography business of Elrich W. Murphy. Over 2,500 professional photographs taken by Murphy capture members of Alexandria's African American community and local events. Images of Murphy's family and friends were taken primarily by Murphy, but there are also family photographs taken by other people. Of interest is an oversized, hand-colored photographic print of the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument. Included formats in this collection are film negatives, photographic prints, ephemera, and digital surrogates of receipt books and an accounting ledger.

The collection contains photos of Eulalie Gardner, her circle of friends, family, and students. The photos date from the 1920's through he 1930's, with photos of vacationing in Harpers Ferry and the Easter Egg Roll at the White House. A number of historic buildings are featured (the Washington Monument, The Jefferson Memorial, Mt. Vernon estate, the George Washington Masonic National Memorial) as well as shots of the D.C. and Alexandria area.

The collection contains photographs and negatives predominantly of historic Alexandria buildings and civic life from the 1910's to the 1940's. A small number of prints are from the late 19th century. The collection is made up of black and white prints and acetate negatives, with a small number of glass plate negatives and glass lantern slides. The collection has been split into two series.
