Buffalo Soldiers
A scrapbook containing photographs and news clippings documenting activities of the Buffalo Soldiers, Inc., a community action organization of young black men in Monongalia County. Their activities include multi-cultural presentations at local schools, recreation programs for local black children, black heritage programs and festivals, presentations on African history and culture in cooperation with African students from West Virginia University, and cooperative activities with NAACP. Edward C. Tabler, Diaries, Photographs, and Other Material regarding Africa 1 Linear Feet 11 1/2 in. (2 document cases, 5 in. each); (1 large flat storage box, 1 1/2 in.)

Papers of Edward C. Tabler (1916-1977) relating to the history of and hunting in South Africa. The journals, photographs, and maps in the collection document Tabler's travels throughout numerous regions in South Africa, and also his research into the history of the country. Tabler was educated as an engineer at West Virginia University and held various positions with Union Carbide. He was also the author of many books on the history of South Africa and big game hunting. For additional material regarding Tabler's book, refer to A&M 819.

Parker, Franklin, 1921-
Correspondence, notes, government reports, newspaper clippings, bibliographies, news releases and other materials on education in Zambia and northern Zimbabwe as gathered by a Benedum Professor of Education at West Virginia University. Addenda include: 1) vitae with list of writings, reprints, career scrapbook, and special journal issue authored by Parker on George Peabody. 2) Twenty-eight articles regarding mostly prominent educators, historians, politicians, scientists, etc. of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Includes articles on: Arthurdale, West Virginia (1933); Philip Vickers Fithian (1747-1776), a "Princeton Tutor on a Virginia Plantation"; and "General Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) and Philanthropist George Peabody (1795-1869) at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, July 23 - August 30, 1869". Also includes biographical sketch regarding Franklin Parker and research partner and wife Betty J. Parker.

Journal of Dr. John Moore McCalla, documenting his trip to Liberia in a sailing vessel along with recaptured Africans, sponsored by the American Colonization Society. Includes a brief biography of McCalla by Helen Goldsborough and copies of the following photographs: Dr. McCalla; the sister ship to "The Star of the Union", on which he sailed; his passport; Kru houses and a Kru village in Liberia; and the American Colonization Society in Washington.

An agricultural education program sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development administered through the West Virginia University Office of International Programs in cooperation with the West Virginia University College of Agriculture and Forestry. Reports and publicity releases on projects undertaken by the WVU College of Agriculture in East Africa to help the nations of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to develop agricultural educational programs on the secondary and collegiate level. In Kenya as a part of Egerton Agricultural College the program assisted in farm mechanization and dry cropland management. In cooperation with Makerere University of Uganda they assisted in plant husbandry achieving a marked improvement in potato cultivation. Also to be noted is the report and scrapbook of Fran W. Bennett, a member of a three man WVU team that helped in the establishment of Arapai Agricultural College in Uganda.
