Description:

The Washington and Lee University Special Collections and Archives Department houses over 1,000 unique manuscript collections including those of the Rockbridge Historical Society, The American Shakespeare Center, and the Mountain Valley Preservation Association. These collections vary greatly in size, format, and scope. Subjects covered within the collections are diverse and include concentrations in American and Virginia history, regional genealogy, history of propaganda, Southern literature, and theater.

It also houses over 10,000 photographs and prints. Beyond our photograph and print collections, which include scrapbooks, images can also be found within the manuscript collections and University Archives described above. Our photographic holdings vary greatly in size and include numerous formats representative of the evolution of the photographic process. Strengths are local and regional portraiture, landscapes and architecture, W&L University history, including athletics, and late 19th-century travel.

This collection includes correspondence while Jamison was Secretary of War of South Carolina, 1861; scattered letters and papers pertaining to the South Carolina Secession Convention of which he was president, and papers related to his tenure as presiding judge of the military court of Gen. Beauregard's Corps, 1862-1864. Robert Woodward Barnwell and Lawrence Massillon Keitt are among the correspondents.

Folder five contains documents and correspondence from March 1861. Included is another letter concerning an enslaved man, Arthur or Thomas Lynch [see folders three and four]; a detailed letter to South Carolina's governor Francis Pickens from Lucius Quinton Washington, a distant relative of George Washington, from Washington DC on the national political situation in the wake of President Abraham Lincoln's inaugural speech and including strategy and intelligence on Fort Sumter and Pensacola harbor (FL); a letter from Ellison Capers to D. F. Jamison on military arms; and Jamison's report from South Carolina's war department to Governor Pickens.

This collection contains primary and secondary resources pertaining to Robert E. Lee and the Lee family. Included are correspondences from, to, and about Lee and various family members; memorabilia, pamphlets, photographs, reminiscences, miscellaneous personal papers, family history and genealogy. The collection includes materials acquired from the Lee family and items donated to and purchased and compiled by W&L University since Lee's tenure as president of Washington College from 1865 - 1870. Adminstrative papers, such as President's Reports, etc..., from Robert E. Lee's presidency of the school may be found within the W&L University Archives. This letter was written by J. Warner from Washington, D.C. on February 17, 1866 to Robert E. Lee. Warner writes to Lee to inform that he had come across an individual in Philadelphia in possession of a scrapbook of material relating to the Washington family. Warner requests that Lee relay any knowledge which could be used to return the scrapbook to its rightful owner.

Essay, "Colored People in Buffalo District, 1890 - 1957", 1890/1957

This collection is comprised of an eight page typescript essay titled "Colored People in Buffalo District, 1890 - 1957" by Estelle V. Anderson. The essay was written in 1973 and details African American schools, churches, and families of the Buffalo District of southwest Rockbridge County, Va., one of six former magisterial districts which included such communities and locales as Collierstown, Bolivar Mills or Murat, North and South Buffalo, Black's Creek, and Kyger's Hill. The essay includes lists of family names and biographical sketches of a number of the African American community members. Churches mentioned are Cedar Hill Baptist Church, a church on Black's Creek, the former Collierstown Baptist Church, Oxford and Collierstown Presbyterian Churches. A number of former African American schools are also described.
