Autograph letter signed with integral free franked address panel. Georges Washington de Lafayette, La Grange, son of the Marquis de Lafayette, writes a condolence note to Martha after the death of George Washington. Georges writes of Washington's "parental kindness" when he visited Mount Vernon and says, "How far was I to imagine when I left your family that it would be a last farewell."

Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union

The Historical Photograph Collection is largely comprised of materials created by or for the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. Some of the earliest photographs of the estate were created and sold to visitors by the Association as a means of income. Those efforts helped to establish an important collection of 19th century views. The collection spans the 1850s to 2000s and includes over 140 linear feet of analog material providing a visual history of the Mansion, outbuildings, tombs, grounds, events, visitors, collection objects, personnel, and changes throughout the estate.

Historic manuscript collection, 1601/1933 approx. 60 Linear Feet

This collection of historic manuscripts dates from 1607-1933, with the bulk of materials dating from 1738-1868. The correspondence, journals and diaries, legal and financial records, estate documents, and printed ephemera in the collection primarily relate to the Washington and Custis families, the Revolutionary War, and society life in antebellum Washington D.C. and Virginia.

Indenture, between Britannia W. Peter Kennon and her grandsons regarding Mount Vernon heirlooms at Tudor Place, 1907 7 pages Box 10, Folder 09

Indenture made between Britannia Wellington Kennon, party of the first part, and Walter Gibson Peter, Armistead Peter Jr., and George Freeland Peter, parties of the second part, all of the District of Columbia, regarding relics and heirlooms at Tudor Place acquired by Britannia W. Peter Kennon from her mother Martha Custis Peter grand-daughter of Martha the wife of George Washington, known in the family as "The Mount Vernon Heirlooms." Other relics are from the estates of Thomas Peter and Beverley Kennon. Britannia wishes that these relics be preserved by her descendants and that none of them be sold or disposed of.

A.D. 20 pages. Contains acct. of cash on hand, money in hand of Clement Biddle, notes due and pd.--inventory of articles at Mt. Vernon and value (many are crossed off and do not appear in final draft)--articles in mansion house, kitchen, servants hall, wash house, etc. Autograph document, Draft, in unknown hand, entitled "Inventory of Property that belonged to Mrs. Martha Washington Taken the 24th of May and Eleventh of July 1802," 1st draft.
