This collection contains 47 letters concerning naval matters during the American Civil War. Largely addressed to Captain (eventually Commodore) John R. Goldsborough, the letters are signed by high-ranking Union officers like Admiral Samuel Lee, Rear Admiral H. H. Bell, Admiral David Farragut, Admiral A. H. Foote, and Commodore R. B. Hitchcock. Topics covered by the letters include politics, the needs and movements of ships on blockade duty along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, illness at sea, the use of African Americans to replenish dwindling manpower, and more.

This collection includes journals, scrapbooks, and photographs belonging to U. S. Naval Commander Horace Elmer (1846-98). He was an important naval figure who sailed on the USS Hartford's Asiatic mission, but significantly, the Monitor. This collection illustrates, through personal documentation, the experience of life at sea but also Elmer's immense skill and expertise in the US Navy in both mechanical and practical aspects. Information concerning his daughter, Edith Elmer Wood, a prominent progressive housing reformer, is also contained in the collection.
