The Fred W. Smith National Library includes general collections, special collections and archives as a resource for scholars, students, and those interested in George Washington, colonial America and the Revolutionary and founding eras.

The library's general collections include secondary source materials on the Washington and Custis families, and the colonial and founding eras.

The Special Collections materials highlight the lives of George and Martha Washington as well as their descendants through correspondence, financial materials, and original books from George and Martha Washington's library.

The archives of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association holds the historic institutional records of the organization dating back to its founding in 1853.

Gibson, Elizabeth Bordley, 1777-1863

This collection contains correspondence to or from Elizabeth Bordley Gibson, the lifelong friend of Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis. The majority of the collection contains letters to Elizabeth Bordley Gibson from Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis. The correspondence focuses on the Gibson and Lewis families, political events, and the people of Philadelphia. The dates of the material in this collection ranges from 1794-1851, with the bulk of the material dating between 1820-1840. This collection was purchased by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association in 1952, from the estate of Roland S. Morris, of Philadelphia. The Morris family inherited these letters through their familial connection to the Shippen Family, who served as executors to the estate of Elizabeth Bordley Gibson.

Esther Maria Coxe Lewis, Woodlawn, to Elizabeth Bordley Gibson, Chambersburg, 1827 Box 4, Folder 1827.07.05

She acknowledges Mrs. Gibson's letter. Is much pleased with Woodlawn. Mrs. Coxe sends love. "Mama is almost crazy, she is so anxious to see Parke, and the Chieftan. We had yesterday a severe storm, between 20 and 30 trees blown down, and struck by lightening, part of the roof of the house off, together with the Washi House nearby blown dow - everyone today is extremely busy repairing the damages. We are all very much alarmed, as we were really in some danger."

Historic manuscript collection, 1601/1933 approx. 60 Linear Feet

This collection of historic manuscripts dates from 1607-1933, with the bulk of materials dating from 1738-1868. The correspondence, journals and diaries, legal and financial records, estate documents, and printed ephemera in the collection primarily relate to the Washington and Custis families, the Revolutionary War, and society life in antebellum Washington D.C. and Virginia.

A.L.S. 3 pages. Audley to Newport, Rhode Island. Received letter telling of Charley's [Conrad] illness--Lorenzo ill with cough and pain in his head--Mrs. [E.P.] Lewis considering going up to New Port to nurse Charley--hopes Frank C[onrad], [Charles's brother] is better from sea air--Mr. [Henry] Clay to speak at New Port--Mrs. [Mary Custis] Lee here with 4 children--"Mr. and Mrs. W[ashington ?] are delighted with the portico" (?). Name on original manuscript appears as "E. M. Lewis." Autograph letter signed, integral cover, postmarked "Berryville Va. Aug. 17," laminated.

Butler]--Mr. Hervian has finished cousin Mary [Custis] portrait. Name on original manuscript appears as "M. E. A. Lewis." Date on original catalog card appears [c. 1830] Feb. 13.
