Papers collected by Friend E. Clark contain several documents related Lt. F. C. Cox, who served with Gen. James A. Walker during the Civil War: a copy of an undated letter from Col. Charles A. Ronald, 4th Virginia Infantry, to Governor John Letcher on behalf of Lt. F. C. Cox; two letters from Berkeley Moore to Septimus/Septimius Hall, written July 3 and 12, 1919, related to Cox and his military service; and a short typed genealogy of the Davis-Cox family recording family history from 1769 to 1898. Also includes two of Friend Clark's class notebooks for Advanced Chemistry and Agricultural Chemistry at West Virginia University. Notebooks contain lecture notes and laboratory assignment notes for the 1897-1898 academic year.

Papers regarding West Virginia statehood and the history of Wheeling and Ohio County compiled by Judge Gibson L. Cranmer (1826-1903) of Wheeling, West Virginia, who served as secretary of the Wheeling Convention that repudiated Virginia's secession from the United States in 1861. Series 1 includes manuscript narratives and correspondence describing events of the West Virginia statehood movement, written by eyewitnesses at the request of Gibson L. Cranmer. Manuscript authors include John S. Burdett, John S. Carlile, Daniel Frost, Lewis Ruffner, and Benjamin Wilson. Series 2 includes Cranmer's handwritten notes, drafts of articles, copies of documents, and letters solicited by him regarding the history of Wheeling and Ohio County, West Virginia. The John J. Clarke Civil War papers consist of documents, including commissions, military orders, correspondence, and dispatches that relate to activities in and around Charleston, South Carolina during the period of 1864 to 1865. One letter (dated February 4, 1865) to Colonel Clarke from Headquarters discusses proposed training of African-American troops in the Confederate States of America Corps of Engineers.

This collection consists of 26 letters, bulk 1862-1865, from Mortimer Howell Johnson and his son Porter to members of their immediate family. The Johnson Family, originally from West Virginia, moved to Brownsburg in Rockbridge County, Virginia, although they maintained close ties to their former home.
