Correspondence and manuscripts of articles by Grafton resident Charles Carpenter (1889-1975), a historian, writer, and collector of West Virginia memorabilia. The collection also contains a brief genealogy of the Haymond family and an incomplete Upshur County, West Virginia court record book of 1853-1856.

Genealogical descent charts of the Hall, Gandy, and allied families of Preston, County, West Virginia, from 1724 to 1961 as compiled by Clarence M. Smith in 1989. Typescript chiefly lists descendants of George Brown Hall (1824-1882) of Preston County, West Virginia, and his wife, Nancy Gooseman Gandy (1828-1917), also of Preston County. along with birth, marriage, and death dates.

A privately printed paperback book, two typescripts, and a xerox copy of an 1864 deed, all relating to the Haymond Family, mainly the descendants of a John (1700-1750) and Margaret Haymond through their son Calder Haymond. Material covers the years 1700-1970.

Contains a land grant for land in Monongalia County, Virginia signed by James Monroe (1801; oversize); a typed copy of a Civil War-era letter from a Union soldier (1862); genealogical information; and other material. M.K. Lowther (1869-1947) was a journalist and one of the first women newspaper editors in West Virginia. She was the author of the HISTORY OF RITCHIE COUNTY; BLENNERHASSETT ISLAND IN ROMANCE AND TRAGEDY; FRIENDSHIP HILL, HOME OF ALBERT GALLATIN; MARSHALL HALL AND OTHER POTOMAC POINTS IN STORY AND PICTURE; and MT. VERNON: ITS CHILDREN, ITS ROMANCES, ITS ALLIED FAMILIES AND MANSIONS. There are complete and incomplete typescripts, rough drafts, revisions, photographs and plates of her books. Also there are typescripts of news articles on Washington, D.C., the Potomac Valley, and Wood County. There are genealogical notebooks and correspondence and also correspondence to publishers concerning business arrangements. Two manuscript volumes containing surveyors' field notes for Harrison County, and copies of Monongalia County surveys, compiled by members of the Haymond family. These notes also contain: information concerning acreage cleared, location and type of construction of the homes of some early residents of Harrison County; dates of patents and names of those persons to whom patents were issued; street courses and survey of the corporation of Clarksburg, 1835; and names of members of a survey party, wages paid, miscellaneous expenses, and camp locations.

Newspaper articles of historical and genealogical interest by Scotland G. Highland, compiled and published in magazine form as the Third and Fourth Annual Christmas Plea, 1926 and 1927. Each of the pleas contains information about the Lewis, Smith, Highland, Fulton, Patton, Maxwell, Moore, Gore, Reynolds, Post, and Haymond families. Each Plea also contains an appeal for the abolition of capital punishment.
