The collection contains World War I and II correspondence of members of the Shackelford family. Topics include military training and the war in France, 1917-1918; employment with the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation's Legal Division; SHAEF messages from Eisenhower re the surrender of Germany, 1945 May 7; tours of duty in Hawaii, Okinawa, and China during and after World War II, 1943-1946, particularly air raids, victory celebrations, fighting on Okinawa, U. S. forces in China at the close of the war, Chinese nationalists and the Communist revolution; as well as the formation of the Monticello Graveyard Association and a proposed armory on University of Virginia grounds.

Abstract Or Scope

The collection contains the papers of the first proctor Arthur S. Brockenbrough and his successors including Thomas H. Carter and Major Green Peyton. The earliest papers include 57 letters from Thomas Jefferson to Arthur S. Brockenbrough mainly concerning construction of the University buildings. The collection also includes an enclosure "A view of the whole expenses of the Funds of the University," [1821 September 30] copies of which were also sent to John H. Cocke and Joseph C. Cabell by Jefferson.

Papers of the Tucker, Harrison and Smith Families 1790-1940

Abstract Or Scope

The Tucker, Harrison, and Smith papers (accession numbers 2589, 3825, 3847, 3947-a through 3847-h, and 3847-j through 3847-l) consist of nineteen linear shelf feet (ca. 22,500 items) ranging in date from 1790 through 1940. The collection consists of the correspondence and papers of members of several families linked together by marriage and in many cases connected to the University of Virginia. In addition to the correspondence, which is the major portion of the collection, there are manuscripts, including poems by George Tucker and his unpublished novel A Century Hence or A Romance of 1941, diaries including one from the Civil War period, financial records, genealogical information, student notebooks, notebooks and papers of several University of Virginia professors, wills, and a few miscellaneous papers dealing with slaves.
