The papers deal with his work in the field of botany: as Curator of the Herbarium; as organizer of the Appalachian Botanical Club and editor of its journal, Castanea; and in various phases of botanical research. Some of the correspondence deals with academic duties and activities, and also reflects his interests in religious, historical, and civic activities at Core, WV.

Mock-up of illustrations for the book "Flora of West Virginia, Second Edition" by Earl L. Core and P.D. Strausbaugh. The mock-up shows a rough draft of what the illustrated pages of the book would look like when published. Mock-up is composed of black and white botanical illustrations on pieces of illustration board (11 in. x 16 in.). The mock-ups show the layout of text and illustrations with notes and corrections. Also contains mock-ups and other material regarding the book's cover illustrations. See "Historical Note" and "Scope and Content Note" for further information.
