This collection contains twentieth century records pertaining to the life and career of Asa Orin Bishop, long time general manager of sales for company stores at Pocahontas Fuel-Consolidation Coal in Virginia. Records include financial, operational and promotional materials for Pocahontas Fuel (and later, Pocahontas Fuel-Consolidation Coal) and Pocahontas United Methodist Church, as well as a variety of sales training resources. The collection features a range of materials such as photographs, newspapers and clippings, ledger books and correspondence.

Abstract Or Scope
Mine disaster reports, official hearing reports, and hearing and inquest transcripts (1938-1967). Most of the mine disaster reports were created by inspectors from the West Virginia Department of Mines, and some of them involved federal inspectors. Other reports were created by the United States Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia Department of Mines Coal Mine Safety Board of Review. Also includes volumes 3 through 8 of the Decisions of the Interior Board of Mine Operations Appeals (1974-1977). The mine disaster reports and associated materials pertain to the following mining companies, with counties where the disaster occurred in parentheses: American Rolling Mill Company (Boone County), Amigo Smokeless Coal Company (Wyoming County), Boone County Coal Corporation, Christopher Coal Company (Monongalia County), Davis Coal and Coke Company (Tucker County), Hatfield-Campbell Creek Coal Company (Kanawha County), Hitchman Coal and Coke Company (Marshall County), Island Creek Coal Company (McDowell County), Katherine Coal Company (Harrison County), Koppers Coal Company (McDowell County), MacAlpin Coal Company (Raleigh County), C.H. Weekly compilations of photocopied news clippings prepared by the publicity department of Consolidation Coal Company. The clippings are taken from a wide variety of newspapers and document to a limited extent the coal industry nationally. Principally, however, the clippings focus on issues directly related to the company, the Bituminous Coal Operators Association, and the United Mine Workers of America, relying mainly on Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia newspapers.

Photocopies of newspaper articles regarding the Farmington Mine Disaster. The articles were photocopied, arranged by date, and labeled with bibliographic data by a professional clipping service. The Farmington Mine disaster was an explosion that happened on 20 November 1968, at the Consol No. 9 coal mine; 78 miners died as a result of the explosion. The Farmington disaster was a catalyst for major changes in mining safety laws, including the 1969 Coal Mine Safety and Health Act. This collection contains newspaper articles from 20 November 1968, the day of the explosion, through January 1969, as well as editorials (1968-1969).

Includes correspondence for the years 1900-1931; shipping records indicating the type of brick, to whom sent, quantity sent, railroad, and the date for the years 1907-1913; freight bills from various railroads for the years 1906 to 1909 and 1921 to 1923; bills and orders, 1900 to 1931; one large payroll book with line entries for each worker listing days and hours worked with deductions for store, coal, etc., one unrelated account book for a store at Lancaster, Pa., for the years1803 to 1811; cancelled check files for 1906,1908,1921,1924 and 1928; and three sample bricks produced by the company.

Papers collected by the Barnes family of WV and Ohio regarding the Farmington Mine Disaster (1968 November 20) and its aftermath. Includes newspaper and clippings; letters of support from the Methodist Church and others to Rev. John Barnes; letters from both their mothers to his wife, Jacqueline Barnes; a handwritten narrative account by Jacqueline Barnes; and other material such as official reports from the coal company, Consol. Includes full issues (1968-1973) of various newspapers, mostly The Fairmont Times and The West Virginian (Fairmont, WV), and magazines from the national press, the United Methodist Church, and the United Mine Workers of America. Box 1 (1954-2009) contains the first-hand account, correspondence, reports, and some of the periodicals. Box 2 (1968 November 12-1973 October 11, 1993-2010) contains the newsapers and other periodicals such as Life Magazine.

The first two pages show the schedule of activities for Thursday, August 1 through Saturday, August 3, 1907. Includes information on the number of mines, production, acreage, house ownership, and employment numbers for Consolidation Coal Company, Fairmont Coal Company, Clarksburg Fuel Company, Pittsburgh and Fairmont Fuel Company, Southern Coal and Transportation Company, and Somerset Coal Company. This is followed by 52 plates showing photographs of various mine and coaling stations belonging to those six companies. Plates include details of capacity, type of mining (electric, compressed air), and haulage (electric, rope, mule). Also includes three folded maps of mining company properties and operations that have been separated to the map collection.
