Often mentioned names are John Bennett, Joseph Bennett, Levi Bennett, William Bennett, James Campbell, Moses Ellsworth, Anthonius Jacobus Henckel, John Justus Henckel, John Skidmore and Levi Skidmore. There are articles on the Bennett Coat of Arms, James Campbell, John Justus Henckel and Hinkle's Fort. The Hinkle articles mention the family as pioneers in what is now Pendleton County and the building of the fort that bears their name. Hinkle's Fort was an important patriotic outpost in this part of Virginia during the Revolutionary War. Material covers the years 1500-1991.

Financial and farm records of James Campbell who owned a plantation near Arden, Berkeley County on which he also operated a store. The collection also includes a ledger and some loose financial papers of James L. Campbell who ran the family homestead.

Campbell family

Account book, 1856-1901, of James Wilson Campbell. Includes estate settlement of his father, James L. Campbell, Cattle pedigrees, and various accounts, including some kept in James L.'s hand. Correspondence, 1866-1899 concerns family affairs, business, and there is one letter from a cousin at Marietta College, 1866, telling of geological field trip through the Wood, Ritchie, Pleasants, oil district of W. Va. School notes on mathematics and surveying of James Wilson Campbell, ca. 1854-1859; Misc. papers, notes, accounts, etc.

Nave, Jessie Campbell, 1867-1932
Two diaries (1891-1892) authored by Jessie Campbell Nave (born 1867, died 1932 as Jessie Hill), the great niece of Alexander Campbell, a leader in the Protestant religious movement known as the "Disciples of Christ" and founder and first President of Bethany College. Jessie's father, Archibald W. Campbell, whose activities are documented in the diaries, was the editor of the "Wheeling Intelligencer." These diaries document her experiences as a married upper-class late 19th century West Virginia woman, and member of the prominent Campbell family. Her first husband was William Nave. Many facets of West Virginia history are touched on, including the Campbell family, the Campbell Mansion (which is a historic site), Bethany College, Wheeling, and daily life in Bethany; other topics include women's history, European travel, and African-Americans. Transcripts are available.

Mercer Family Genealogy, 1988/1995 0 Linear Feet Summary: 16 pages

Mercer Family
A family history and genealogical record of the Mercer family of Monongalia County, WV with mention of the allied families of Brown and Campbell. Robert Mercer was the first of the family to settle in what is now West Virginia near Morgantown in 1766. He was the son of Gideon Mercer and the grandson of John Mercer, the earliest known family member in America. John Mercer was a Quaker merchant of New York City and an extensive landowner of Manhattan Island. Also noted is the movement and settlement of the family, particularly of the line of Robert Mercer's son Joseph, into Pennsylvania and Ohio. Noted are the frontier activities of Joseph Mercer's children: Phoebe and Nottingham, the latter being a veteran of the War of 1812. Two sons of Phoebe, Henry Marshall Campbell and James Campbell, served in the PA 46th Volunteer Infantry, Company F during the Civil War with James being killed in Virginia at the battle of Cedar Mountain. Material covers the years 1766-1933.

Seiler family

This is a collection of letters and documents tracing the personal and business life of an eastern panhandle West Virginia family. The papers concern a broad range of political, social, financial, and legal topics, particularly focusing on J. Hammond Siler, Jr., his parents, J. Hammond Siler, Sr. and Jessie Castleman Siler (residents of the Town of Bath better known as Berkeley Springs). Also includes correspondence and other papers from related families. Subjects include banking, the Civil War, the Episcopal church, secession of Virginia, Virginia Loyalty Oath, women's diaries, and women's letters and papers. A notable item in the collection is the diary of Anne Doyne Wolff Strother, wife of artist and writer David Hunter Strother, documenting a trip with husband and daughter Emily to New Orleans in 1857 (S2/Box 67, folder 1a).
