Beverley Dandridge Tucker IIIwas born on August 25, 1925, in Shanghai, China, where his father Augustine Washington Tuckerwas a surgeon at the Christian hospital of St. Luke's. Tucker received his A.B. from Harvardin 1949 and an A.M. in 1958; he received a divinity degree from Virginia Theological Seminaryin 1952. After language school at Yale, Tucker left for Japanin January, 1953, as an Episcopal missionary priest. He spent another year at Kobein further language training and received his ordination in the spring of 1954; at the same time he began his assignment as rector of St. Michael's Churchin Sapporo, Hokkaido.

The Cocke- ElliotFamily papers contain ca. 15,000 items (41 Hollinger boxes, ca. 17 linear feet and four oversize folders), ca. 1773-1992, and consist largely of personal and family correspondence, financial and legal papers, memorabilia, bound volumes, and genealogical and historical research material pertaining to the Cocke, Elliot, and related families from the colonial period through the twentieth century, assembled by John Page Elliot.

This collection consists of seven bound volumes, 1847-1883, mostly related to James Edgar Chancellor's medical education and service, and miscellaneous letters and papers. James Edgar Chancellor(1826-1896) was the son of George Chancellorand Ann (Lyon) Pound Chancellorof Spotsylvania County, Virginia. He had two brothers, Reverend Melzi Sanford Chancellorand Colonel Lorman Chancellor. He studied at Fredericksburg, Jefferson Medical Collegein Philadelphia, and the University of Virginia(first session, 1846-47). He lived near Spotsylvania Court Houseuntil 1862 when he put his property up for sale and moved to Charlottesvillewhere he practiced medicine at the Confederate States Armyhospital. Some of the materials in this collection relate to his service as a surgeon in the Confederate States Army. He was also an instructor (Demonstrator of Anatomy) at the University of Virginiafrom the fall of 1865 until the spring of 1872.
