Albemarle County (Va.) Marriage Registers, 1806-1894

Abstract Or Scope

Marriage Register, 1806-1868, is divided into two sections. The first section covering pages 1-128, 1806-1861, records the names of both parties, the date when the marriage license was issued, the minister by whom the parties were married and the date when the marriage ceremony took place. In 1813, another category is added--to whom the marriage license fee was issued by or paid to. From 1816-1821, an additional category was recorded--to whom the marriage license fee was repaid. The second section covering pages 130-146, 1865-1868, records only the names of both parties, the date when the marriage license was issued and to whom the fee for the license was paid. On pages 145-146, there are additional entries for the year 1867. There is a gap in the entries for the marriage register from 1862-1864 due to the Civil War. From 1865-1868, the marriages of African Americans are recorded in this volume.

Content Warning

ARVAS is an aggregator of archival resources. ARVAS does not have control of the descriptive language used in our members’ finding aids.

Finding aids may contain historical terms and phrases, reflecting the shared attitudes and values of the community from which they were collected, but are offensive to modern readers. These include demeaning and dehumanizing references to race, ethnicity, and nationality; enslaved or free status; physical or mental ability; religion; sex; and sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many institutions and organizations are in the process of reviewing and revising their descriptive language, with the intent to describe materials in more humanizing, inclusive, and harm-reductive ways. As members revise their descriptive language, their changes will eventually be reflected in their ARVAS finding aids.
