Abstract Or Scope

The Secretary of Transportation records, 2014-2018, consist of 13 archival boxes and are divided into 4 series. Series have been designated for Correspondence - Assigned State Agencies (I), Correspondence - Secretary (II), Decision briefs (III) and Subject files (IV). These records document the work of Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne, Jr., during the McAuliffe administration and were created or collected, 2014-2018, though some documents in this collection pre-date this time period.

Virginia Volunteers, First Regiment Enlistment Records, 1911-1916

Abstract Or Scope

Volumes contain the enlistment records including oaths of enlistment and physical record of volunteers in Companies A and B of the First Regiment (a.k.a. 70th Regiment) of Virginia Volunteers between 1911 and 1916. The enlistment records include the following information: name, rank, age, height, complexion, hair color, eye color, county or city born, state born, occupation, residence, when enlisted, where enlisted, by whom enlisted, period enlisted for, marrried or single, remarks as to record of previous military service, and name & address of person to be notified in case of emergency. The enlistment records include an oath of enlistment signed by the volunteer swearing to support the Constitution of the United States and Virginia. Below the oath is a consent form required in case the volunteer was a minor. The physical record, as certified by the examining surgeon, notes the condition of the volunteer including his sight, hearing, heart, lungs, etc. The surgeon also noted addictions to alcohol or opium. Finally, each enlistment record is signed and certified by the company commander.

Virginia Volunteers, Richmond Light Blues Infantry Battalion Enlistment Records, 1906-1916

Abstract Or Scope

Volume contains the enlistment records including oaths of enlistment and physical record of volunteers in the Richmond Light Infantry Blues Battalion of Virginia Volunteers between 1906 and 1916. The enlistment records contain an oath to support the laws and Constitution of the United States and the laws and Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The oath was sworn by the volunteer and certified by the company commander. The oath also contains a consent in case of minor signed by a relative or guardian if required. The reverse of the enlistment record includes a description and physical record of the soldier. Included in the description is the following information: name, command, age, height, weight, color of hair, color of eyes, complexion, where born, occupation, residence, marital status, name & address of person to notify in case of emergency, and previous military or naval experience. The physical record, as certified by the examining surgeon, notes the condition of the volunteer including his sight, hearing, heart, lungs, etc. The surgeon also noted addictions to alcohol or opium.

Papers of Louis I. Jaffé, 1917-1919

Abstract Or Scope

There are forty-five items, 1917-1919, pertaining to Louis Isaac Jaffé while serving in the U. S. Army during World War I, and as a member of the staff of the American Red Cross commission to the Balkans. Included are electrostatic copies of his handwritten diaries kept during this period, and fifteen photographs of Jaffé and others taken at Fort Myer, Virginia; Leon Springs, Texas; and Is-sur-Tille, Vichy, and Paris, France. There are also papers, February 1919, concerning his discharge from the Army in Europe in order to work for the Red Cross; travel certificates, orders, and a special pass, 1919, for travel between France and Germany, for service with the Red Cross; and, authorization, October 1, 1919, to leave Paris for South Boston, Virginia. Miscellaneous items include programs and tickets for several plays in Paris and a brochure for the American Officers' Hotel (Hotel du Louvre).

William Edward Lavery (1930-2009) was president of Virginia Tech from 1975 to 1987. The collection contains mainly incoming and outgoing correspondence (1975-1987) concerning college activities and issues of Lavery's administration including admission and records; commencement exercises; inaugural activities; homecoming; the Alumni Association; faculty and student affairs; the College of Veterinary Medicine; speeches and speech material.

Rosemary Brandau Papers, 1989.

Abstract Or Scope

The Rosemary Brandau Papers include files Rosemary Brandau compiled while participating in the Attingham Summer School on the British Country House from July 7-25, 1989. As manager of historic food programs at Colonial Williamsburg, Brandau was studying kitchens and domestic work spaces in preparation for making modifications to the "British" kitchen at the Governor's Palace. Her files consist primarily of guidebooks for various country houses and slides she shot while touring the homes. The collection also includes a file of clippings and pamphlets concerning the recreated Tudor kitchens at Hampton Court Palace. In addition, the files encompass some correspondence and research notes related to her participation in the Attingham Summer School.

Museum District Association records, 1986/2000

Abstract Or Scope

The collection is comprised of institutional materials ranging from the 1970s to 2009 for the MDA. There are financial records, board meeting minutes and agendas, and correspondence that are generated from the daily running of the association. There is also a great deal of presidents' notes, MDA published materials and their various stages before publishing, and miscellaneous administration documents. Most zoning cases are residential with a few restaurant business included, and are primarily comprised of board member emails and member emails pertaining to each zoning case.
