Abstract Or Scope

U.S. District Court case files and opinions, both published and unpublished, constitute about half of this collection. Also included are biographical materials, correspondence, subject files, scrapbooks, political memorabilia and artifacts, and photos. Activities of Clarke's father, J. Calvitt Clarke, are documented in the Christian Children's Fund, Inc. & Children, Inc. papers, 1956-1999 found here.

Lewis F. Powell Jr. Papers 1921-1998

Abstract Or Scope

The Lewis F. Powell Jr. Papers document the life of this Richmond, Virginia attorney and Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The papers span the years 1921-1998(some few items of family history pre-date this period)and document his legal career; military service in World War II; leadership positions in varied civic and professional organizations; and friendships and family relations. Documentation of his work as an attorney is limited, as client files remain with his former law firm, Hunton & Williams. At one hundred forty two cubic feet, Supreme Court case files, 1972-1987, constitute almost half of the collection.

Abstract Or Scope

The Walter E. Hoffman papers suggest the breadth of his judicial service, with records from 8 U.S. Circuit courts and the U.S. Supreme Court in addition to those from the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia. His service in professional associations, most particularly the Judicial Conference of the United States is well documented. Unfortunately, there is a dirth of biographical information and many of his most memorable trials are not represented in the collection.

M. Caldwell Butler Papers 1945-2006

Abstract Or Scope

The M(anley)Caldwell Butler Papers consist of approximately 96 cu. ft. of materials from 1925-2006. Most of the papers cover the periods 1972-1982 and 1995-1997. The papers are divided into seventeen series: June Nolde Butler papers; correspondence and subject files; military service; appointment calendars; campaigns; scrapbooks, clippings and photos; speeches; newsletters, press releases, radio reports and weekly reports; voting record; constituency correspondence; confirmation of Gerald R. Ford as Vice President; impeachment of President Richard M. Nixon; Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978; Legal Services Corporation; re-authorization of the Department of Justice for the Fiscal Year 1982; Voting Rights Act extension; the National Bankruptcy Review Commission, 1995-1997; and Artifacts, 1944-1998. With the exceptions of the first six series and National Bankruptcy Review Commission materials, these papers were generated during Butler's terms as U. S. Representative for the 6th Congressional District of Virginia, 1972 -1982 (93rd Congress - 97th Congress).

The James C. Turk papers deal almost exclusively with his service as judge on the Western District of Virginia Federal Court from 1972-2014. Nothing from his childhood, education, war service or legislative career are documented here. Of the many civic and educational boards on which he served, only his relationship with Washington and Lee University is treated in these papers.

Abstract Or Scope

The Newton D. Baker, Jr. Collection consists of scrapbooks documenting his life in newspaper clippings; typescript minutes from meetings of the Council on National Defense, 1916-1918; and a variety of printed materials ranging from annual reports of the Secretary of War, 1918-1920, to a 1976 magazine reproducing a speech of Baker's. The scrapbooks were digitized in 2016 and are available online at the Washington and Lee School of Law Digital Commons.

Abstract Or Scope

The A. Christian Compton Papers consist of four record cartons of subject files and three record cartons of his Supreme Court of Virginia case files. Much of the subject files deal with Compton's service to his alma mater, Washington and Lee University, as a board member and as an active alumnus. The case files contain appeal documents with an occasional newspaper clipping or letter.

Lewis F. Powell Jr. Collection 1937-1999

Abstract Or Scope

This open-ended collection comprises discrete gifts of usually small amounts of documentation relating to the life of Justice Powell. These materials come from a variety of sources including friends, associates, and the geneal public. The Powell Archives staff have also added news clippings. Materials separated from the Powell Papers that would, in most cases, have been discarded, are also housed here for possible exhibition or other use not directly related to research. These materials include duplicate speeches,clippings, and Supreme Court slip opinions.
