Primary Collecting Areas:
One of the library’s missions is collecting and preserving printed, manuscript, photographic, cartographic and genealogical documentation of Leesburg, Loudoun County and the surrounding region. The library actively seeks and welcomes donations of original business records, diaries, correspondence and photographs documenting life, culture, and history of Leesburg and Loudoun County. Library collections include over thirty-two thousand books and periodicals, maps, visual collections, newspapers, government records, and manuscripts. The library offers lectures on history and genealogy, classes, and exhibits. Group tours and orientations are available on request and books about local history are available for purchase on-site. Description:
Thomas Balch Library is a history and genealogy library owned and operated by the Town of Leesburg. Collections focus on Loudoun County, regional and Virginia history, genealogy, military history with special emphasis on the American Civil War, and ethnic history. It is designated as an Underground Railroad research site.

Blue Ridge Library Records 1920-1933

Abstract Or Scope
This collection consists of cancelled checks, bank statements, letters, bills, receipts, and other monetary records of the Blue Ridge Library, dating from 1920 to 1933. The checks are signed by Mrs. Mary E. Dillon (ca. 1886-n.d.), Mrs. A.C. Norman (ca. 1895-1988), and Mrs. Lillian Dillon (1874-n.d.), who were treasurers of the library respectively from 1920-1933. The bank statements record library funds deposited in and withdrawn from the Purcellville National Bank from 1920-1932. The letters include correspondence from library president Mrs. Alice P. James (1887-1946) concerning funds from a bazaar that the library hosted, correspondence with the Literary Guild of America, and correspondence with the cashier of the Purcellville National Bank. The bills are for subscriptions to the Ladies' Home Journal.

The Wilbur C. Hall Papers consist primarily of materials relating to Wilbur Hall's interest in the history of early America, Virginia, and Loudoun County. There is little material pertaining to his work as an attorney in Leesburg, his career in government, or his personal and family life.

Loudoun Merchant and Trade Research Collection 1800-1903

This collection consists of newspaper advertisements clipped from photocopies of 19th century newspapers, microfilmed newspapers, and other sources by Dr. Fred D. Johnson in the course of his research to identify merchants and tradesmen operating at that time.

Bowie Family Collection 1847

Abstract Or Scope
The Bowie Family Collection includes a bill of sale for various house furnishings, stamped covers from business and personal correspondence, as well as an autograph letter signed from Evan Lyons (1806-1876), a miller and business associate of Bowie.

Jane Chinn Sween Research Collection 1850-1939

Abstract Or Scope
This collection consists of documents pertaining to the Chinn/Noland family, including copies and transcriptions of correspondence by Jacob Edwin Chinn (1825-n.d.) and Samuel Walter Chinn (1835-n.d.) from 1850-1860 and membership applications to National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and United Daughters of the Confederacy. There are also postcards addressed to Rawleigh Chinn (1894-n.d.) dating from 1908-1917. Articles from the Middleburg Chronicle and Washington, D.C. Sunday Star discuss the influence of the Chinn family in Middleburg and the Middleburg origin of Benjamin Thompson (1826-n.d.), first mayor of Denver, Colorado. Additional documents describing individual family members include those for Francis Aubrey (1690-1741), William Berkeley Noland (1827-1901), Colonel Robert Callender (1726-1776), William Henry Noland (1808-n.d.), Charles Fenton Mercer Noland (1810-n.d.), Callender St. George Noland (1816-n.d.), Frances Callender Noland (1797-1855), Thomas Johnson Noland (1799-1857), Lloyd Noland (1790-1871), Samuel Noland (n.d.), Dade Noland (ca. 1780-1838), Major William Noland (1775-1855), Thomas Noland (1748-1811), and Philip Noland (1718-1794).

Dorothy Rickard Collection 1984

This collection consists of the memoirs of Dorothy Rickard from the Depression, stories and poems about the American Civil War and daily logs of trips Rickard made. The collection also includes some of Rickard family history.

George W. Janney Collection, 1804-1884

Abstract Or Scope
The collection is made up of the business and personal papers of George W. Janney. The business papers contain accounts and inventories from various stores, court records, tax and insurance information, and paperwork from the settlement of his father's estate. Included is Janney's business correspondence, which contains information about purchasing wholesale goods for his stores, transporting goods, settling debts and collecting on debts owed to him, and negotiating prices. There are 20 account books in the collection from various stores and from the Loudoun and Berlin Bridge Company. Also included in the collection are papers relating to Janney's family, the education of his children, his appointments as postmaster, and involvement in fraternal groups, as well as some personal correspondence.
