This collection contains a diary used by a Union and Confederate soldier, both unnamed, through 1864. The Union soldier chronicles his combat experiences during Jubal Early's raid on Washington, D.C., and the opening of Philip Sheridan's Valley campaign in August. The Confederate soldier's entries details activity during Early's push to drive the Union army out of the Valley and concludes with the battle of Opequon or Third Winchester.

"11033 is the artist's meditation on the feelings and experiences of Mary Morst, a black woman in the Virginia State Penitentiary in 1921. Imprisoned behind the black bars of the book's cover, 11033 centers Mary's complex life and shares her story as an imprisoned murderer and the mother of twin children born 'behind bars.' This sculptural artist's book incorporates embedded copies of archival documents, including newspaper clippings, letters, and pardon applications alongside a fictional text woven poetically throughout the historical narrative. The inspiration for this project grew from IBe' Crawley's research into the untold stories of women and girls impacted by oppressive Virginia laws and continued enslavement. Unlike most black women and girls, Mary Morst's story is recorded because of her relationship to the penal system. This collection contains a black and white photograph of Black army musicians of the 165 Depot Brigade, Camp Travis, Texas. A typed caption pasted on the back of the photo reads, "#263 Negro Band, Frist [sic] Group, 165 Depot Brigade, Camp Travis, Texas. Taken just outside Army Y.M.C.A. Building No. 1, devoted exclusively to negro troops. (Negro Secretaries in charge.)" Publicity Bureau National War Work Council, Y.M.C.A. Northeastern Dept. 352 Little Bldg. Boston, Mass is stamped in ink on the back. The picture depicts twenty-one men seated and two standing in uniform outside the Y.M.C.A building. The men hold their instruments, which include trumpets, French horns, saxophones, clarinets, trombones, tuba, and drums. The role of Depot Brigades was to receive and organize recruits, provide them with uniforms, equipment, and initial military training, and then send them to France to fight on the front lines. The depot brigades also received soldiers returning home at the war's end and completed their outprocessing and discharges.

Others were possibly removed by departing administrators and faculty who viewed them as personal documents. The records described here constitute the extant records of the school from its founding in 1867 until its merger in 1899.

This collection contains a photocopy of a diary from the American Civil War belonging to an unidentified soldier. The contents of the diary were written between 1862 and 1863 and describes what life was like for the author during the war. The author was a bugler in the 2nd Mississippi Calvary Regiment of the Confederate Army based on details from the account and the names of Generals and Officers that he served under.

36th Battalion Virginia Cavalryman's Letter, 1864 0.1 Cubic Feet 1 folder

This letter is from a Confederate cavalryman of the 36th Battalion Virginia Cavalry of the Confederate Army to a "Miss E" on February 24th, 1864, at the headquarters of the battalion during the American Civil War. The author describes his experience at the battle of Jonesville, which occured from January 2nd to January 3rd, in which the Confederate soldiers were led under the guidance of General William "Grumble" Jones. This battle resulted in the cavalryman receiving a slight wound to his head, and a Confederate victory. He also provides an emotional sentiment as he wishes to be with "Miss E" and he hopes for an end to the war.

398th United States Army Air Force Bombardment Squadron Collection, 1944/1945 0.20 Linear Feet

Contains a handwritten diary, roster, booklets, and newsletters that were collected by a member of the 398th Bombardment Squadron, 504th Bombardment Group of the Twentieth United States Army Air Force that was stationed on Tinian Island during Word War II. Included in the collection is a diary written by an unknown soldier that follows his voyage from Seattle, Washington in November 1944 up through the end of the War in September 1945. The unknown soldier was an enlisted soldier and worked on Tinian Island as a storekeeper and as a K.P. (Kitchen Police). Some of the topics mentioned in the diary included life aboard his ship, the S.S. Sea Star, Tokyo Rose, Japanese snipers, rations, airplane crashes, bombing missions, casualty lists and events, Naval support and daily life on Tinian. The diary begins with detailed, daily entries and then becomes sporadic by the end. The collection also contains a pocket guide to the Nansei Shoto Islands prepared by the special publication branch, Information-Education Section. The pocket guide was designed for an American G.I. to understand the islands and their inhabitants. Much of the guide contains stereotypes and propaganda about the Okinawan people. The collection also contains a pamphlet titled, "Wecome San Francisco Port of Embarkation," a booklet for service men stationed at Camp Stoneman on their return from fighting in the War. The guide is informal in nature, containing illustrations and informal language. It was designed as a rulebook for G.I.'s during their stay at Camp Stoneman. The collection also contains issues of "The Daily Star" newspaper, the newspaper of the S.S. Sea Star. The Daily Star provided a glimpse into shipboard life, newsclippings from the warfront and back in the states, a Chaplin's message, sports scores, cartoons, the ship's "Plan-of-the-day" and other miscellanous articles. The collection also contains the book "A History of the War In Maps, In Pictographs, in Words" by Penguin Books, published in 1944. The book was a joint military and Penguin Books publication designed to help both the military and civilian population understand the war. The collection also contains a roster with addresses of the enlisted members of the 398th Bombardment Squadron, 504th Bombardment Group. Some of the names included in the unknown soldier's diary are present in the roster, others are missing.

The medal is a copper colored metal and is circular. On one side of the medal is a dotted border, and in curvered text inside the border is "39TH NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT G.A.R. DENVER SEPT. 1905." The center of the medal has a curved laurel wreath design with text inside it that reads "IN HONOR OF THE BRAVE MEN WHO VICTORIOUSLY DEFENDED THE UNION ON LAND AND SEA DURING THE WAR OF THE GREAT REBELLION 1861-1865." On the reverse side of the medal is a depiction of a rocky mountain with a camp on top. Text at the bottom of the image reads "Pikes Peak."
