Papers, 1742-1856 (bulk 1772-1800), of Zachariah Johnston (1742-1800) of Augusta and Rockbridge Counties, Virginia, consisting of: accounts, affidavits, agreements, appraisals, birth records, bonds, certificates, correspondence, deeds, genealogies, inscriptions, land grants, lists, notebooks, plats, poems, promissory notes, receipts, reports, and wills. The bulk of the collection is correspondence between Johnston, his sons, other family members, friends, and political colleagues; and deals with family business and news, land holdings in Virginia and Kentucky, and political matters. Also includes a biography of Johnston by Matthew White Paxton, Jr. (1898-1987).

Abstract Or Scope

Account book of Zachary Lewis, documents an eighteenth-century Virginia jewelry/watchmaking business and the uses of gold, silver, and crystal in the repair or creation of jewelry and watches. Account book lists names of customers; repair, purchase, or service; and payment for services by cash or trade. Included are accounts of Robert Bullard, Nat. Dandridge, Patrick Henry, James Littlepage, James Madison, John Marshall, and John Waller. Also listed are several members of the Coleman, Dabney, Darracott, Fleming, Garret, Goodloe, Graves, Herndon, Johnson, Lewis, Madison, Meriwether, Minor, Robinson, Shackelford, Smith, Stubblefield, Thompson, Waller, Walton, Winston, and Woodroof families.

This collection contains correspondence and a petition regarding the Zackquill Morgan Homestead. Correspondence from J.M.G. Brown, Chairman Committee for Civic and Industrial Betterment, 3-7-29, to Mrs. Max Mathers. Brown informs Mathers that a committee has been appointed to investigate the proposal to purchase the Homestead. Letter from the Col. John Evans Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to the mayor and members of the Common Council of the City of Morgantown, endorsing Mather's proposal. Letter from Max Mathers to W.E. Brooks, City Manager of Morgantown, WV, 6-17-29, informing the City Manager that he will sell the Zackquill Morgan Homestead for $30,000. A petition from members of the Monongalia Historical Society to purchase the Homestead.

Copies of United States Treasury documents ordering the remittance of payments due to Zadock Walker, apparently in exchange for supplies furnished to Major Matthew Irwin, head of the United States government fur trading operation in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The majority of the goods were intended for the use of Native Americans and the drafts were submitted to Colonel Thomas L. McKenney, the United States Superintendent of Indian Trade. Walker was a merchant in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.
