The Alexandria and Fairfax Counties [Virginia] Civil War Correspondence consists of 40 letters by 31 soldiers, dated between 1861 and 1862. Letters were written by soldiers stationed in and around Alexandria and Fairfax counties and Washington, D.C., in the first 12-16 months of the American Civil War.

The collection includes a speech and program from the 1981 Founders Day celebration at Virginia Tech. The speech was given by Alfred Knobler, a graduate of the Class of 1938. In the speech, Knobler talks about environmental issues and calls for increased action aimed at protecting the environment.

Alfred Hughes Family Papers 0.1 Cubic Feet 1 folder

This collection contains the papers of the family of Alfred Hughes (1824-1880), a doctor, Confederate sympathizer, and political prisoner, while he was held at Camp Chase, a Union prison camp in Columbus, Ohio, in 1862 during the American Civil War. Three letters between Alfred and his wife Mary (1832-1909) and sister Eliza (1817-1882), also a doctor, discuss the prison, health of patients, and updates on his parole. There are also envelopes for the letters that are marked as examined by an official at the prison. A pass issued to Hughes by Governor David Tod allows him to visit the prison after his parole, and a newspaper article discusses the U.S. Secretary of War order to release people imprisoned for discouraging enlistment or opposing the draft in the Union.

Alfred L. Mantor Diary, 0.1 Cubic Feet 1 folder

Mantor, Alfred L., abt. 1836(?)-1864
The collection contains the Civil War diary of Alfred Mantor, a corporal (and later sergeant) with "C" Company of the 27th Massachusetts Infantry. Mantor's diary covers January through April of 1864, shortly before he was killed in action in May. Entries focus on his regiment's activities, as well as his personal experiences teaching Sunday school in the Norfolk, Virginia, area.
