Horace Kellogg, Soldier, Civil War Letter regarding Civilian Compensation and Prosecution, 1862 0.01 Linear Feet 1 page (1 folder)

Letter of 28 November 1862, written by Horace Kellogg, a Captain of the 123rd Ohio Infantry, to Rufus Maxwell of St. George, Tucker County, (West) Virginia. The letter concerns repayment for robberies perpetrated against Union citizens by Confederate partisans. Maxwell had been ordered to pay eighty-five dollars towards this debt by 1 December 1862. Kellogg reports the consequences of failing to pay the debt, as ordered by Brigadier General Robert H. Milroy. Milroy's order specifies that persons found in violation shall have their houses burnt, be themselves shot, and have their property seized. The order continues that similar punishment would be brought against citizens that withheld information from Union troops. Receipt of payment is endorsed on the letter, dated 31 November 1862. Material includes a clipping scrapbook of Preble's column on hunting and fishing published in the Steubenville Herald Star, 1939-1942; miscellaneous clippings on Tucker County local history published in the Davis News, 1939; correspondence, 1940-1941, 13 items concerning the Mountain Lake, Maryland folk music festival, and the David H. Strother Memorial. Other newspaper clippings deal with Preble's spelunking activities and snake hunting. Correspondents include Felix G. Robinson and Jennings Randolph.

Zuendel, Jean Gulnac
Contains material regarding the genealogy and history of the Cuming, Sanders, and Gill Families. It focuses on the English ancestors of the families, who primarily originated from Devon. The Cuming family is traced back to the 13th century and a direct line of descent is established in the 17th century starting with Nicholas Cuming. The Sanders family begins in the late 18th century with the descendants of Elburton Sanders. Less material is available regarding the Gill family, tracing only a few generations beginning in the late 18th century with Joseph Gill. Some of the American descendants of these families were associated with Parsons, St. Marys, and other locations in and around West Virginia. The collection also includes reproductions of photographs and documents, as well as photographs, taken in 2003, of locations in Britain relevant to the history of the families.

Several turn of the century receipts and an artist sketch book from Franklin, WV. Also photos of logging boom towns and rural scenes at the turn of the century in the Eastern Panhandle, particularly of Laneville, Tucker County and Petersburg, Grant County.

Recorded to the fronts of the envelopes is information relevant to their contents.

These records document Linda Cooper's efforts to preserve the environment of Canaan Valley, WV, and to establish a National Wildlife Refuge there. These include reports, brochures, and other material regarding the development and creation of the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, correspondence, memoranda, and other material regarding the construction and development of the Davis Pumped Storage Project (a hydroelectric energy storage facility), and newspaper articles, newsletters, correspondence, essays, and other material regarding the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy and other conservation efforts and organizations in West Virginia. Also included are maps of the proposed Refuge and several slide shows from presentations on the Davis Pumped Storage Project, the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, and other similar projects.
