Howard's various business enterprises; farm, livestock, fruit and produce, Wellsville, Ohio; printing firm, Columbus, Ohio; tannery, Corry, Penna.; bank and metal works, Pittsburgh, PA; farm, Congo, WV; subscription agent in Wellsville, Ohio for National Era, Washington, D.C. Earlier letters are to A. G. DeSellem, an uncle, including several concerning missionary work and anti-slavery activities; mention is made of several colleges, Western Reserve, Oberlin, and a school in Albany.

Scrapbook (10 3/4' x 14 1/2') of approximately 175 photographs (attached to 24 leaves) documenting the activities of surveyors of the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad in the period 1900-1910. Includes portraits semi-formal and candid of individuals and groups of B&O employees and others, candid photos of outdoor survey work, indoor office work, and camp life; and pictures of railroad infrastructure such as tracks, bridges, etc. Many individuals and locations are identified. Locations include Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; High Bridge, Kentucky (railroad bridge); and West Virginia (Gauley River, Woods Ferry, Carnifax Ferry, and 'Gad'). Composition of pictures is good. There are a few pictures that include steamboats.

Letters written by a lawyer and businessman near Shanghai in Berkeley County to his sister Mary, who was residing in their father's home at New Cumberland, Virginia. There are also letters written from: Wellsburg Academy, 1849-1850; Washington College, Washington, Pennsylvania, 1851-1855; Cuba, 1857; New Orleans, 1857; and from Richmond, Virginia, 1858-1860. A diary includes entries from 1 January to 20 March 1864. Porter had business relations with firms in Pittsburgh concerning brick making, coal lands, and shipping. Much of the diary concerns his wife's illness and his own poor health and there are a few minor references to Civil War developments and Porter's Union sentiments. Muster records of the Panhandle Greys, a state militia unit, 1861-1863, organized and captained by George McCandless Porter, are included.

Greene, including her visits to Huntington, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati along the way. Schwald went on her trip in late July and travelled with "Two Pfisters, an Arnold, and two Schwalds", her relatives and close companions who were collectively nicknamed the "quintuplets". Typescript is bound with ribbon; a postcard depicting the Gordon C. Greene is pasted onto the second-to-last page.
