A history of the Stateler/Statler family of West Virginia, Ohio, and Illinois from Stephen Statler (ca. 1710-ca. 1784) to Rebecca Margaret Stateler Dougan (1838-1911). The family's settlement patterns start with Stephen Statler disembarking in Philadelphia from Germany in 1749. The family alternately settled along the frontier in Hardy Co. and Monongalia Co., WV; Fayette Co. and Greene Co., PA; Licking Co., OH; and Marshall Co., IL. Their settlement in southwestern Pennsylvania and north central West Virginia corresponded with the Revolutionary War in which Jacob Statler (1748-78), as a soldier, was killed by Indians; and Jakes Run in Monongalia County is named to honor him. Although this collection is primarily a genealogy which is the original intention of its compilers, there is much history of the Jakes Run and Pentress, originally Statlerstown, portions of Monongalia County including maps and illustrations. Other head members of the family mentioned are John Statler, Jacob Stateler, John Stateler, Stephen A. Stateler and David Stateler. Also mentioned are the related families of Brown/Braun and Hannum.

Mainly papers of Samuel T. Tolbert, a onetime constable of Lewis County and postmaster at Frenchton, who operated a general store and acted as agent and surveyor for out-of-state landowners. Included are the papers of Zadock Lanham, J.S. Wilson, John L. Jacob, and W.C. Tolbert. There are surveys, legal papers, correspondence, and lottery certificates from Ohio and Delaware, and Democratic state and county election tickets. Correspondents include Lewis Maxwell, J.M. Bennett, and F.H. Pierpont.

Journal of a Tour through the States of Ohio and Kentucky, commenced Saturday, 29 July 1826, by Thomas Green of Richmond. This journal concludes on 1 April 1827, at Chillicothe. Green's western trip was for the purpose of pursuing land matters, but the journal contains notes on the social, political, and economic life of the old West. Green visited Front Royal, Harrisonburg, Warm Springs, Kanawha Falls, and the Salines of Virginia, crossed the river at Gallipolis, passed through the principal towns and cities of southern Ohio including Cincinnati and Columbus, toured much of western and central Kentucky, visited the Shakers at South Union and Pleasant Hill, watched the canal construction at Louisville, and visited Transylvania University in Lexington.

Facsimiles of manuscripts and typescript transcriptions of the papers of a traveling minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church who became a lawyer and a judge. Topics include Captain Michael Cresap, Chief Logan, western massacres during the Revolutionary War, customs and privations of the western settlers, the Kentucky frontier, Methodism in the west, old preachers, and historical recollections. Scott was assigned circuits in Berkeley, Frederick, Gloucester, Ohio, and Stafford counties of Virginia, and, after 1801, he moved permanently to Ohio. Material covers the years 1700-1856.

Includes court injunctions against UMWA, 1951; affidavits with complaints against UMWA organizers, 1951; list of loyal UMWA members; a letter, 20 February 1951, transmitting this material from George Waters to Steve Kubic; also two credentials for UMWA conventions, 1949 and 1952.

Typescript history of the Ward family of Ohio with a concentration on its association with Harman Blennerhassett, whose secretary was Sylvester Ward. Included is some information on the Blennerhassetts, Aaron Burr, Dudley Woodbridge, Elijah Backus and Aaron Waldo Putnam. Much mention is made of neighboring allied families to the Wards, particularly Hendersons and Putnams in the adjoining counties of Wood Co., VA and Washington Co., OH. There is a detailed transcription of an October 8, 1805 letter by William Howe Cuyler to John G. Henderson describing a disagreement and a duel between his brother, Alexander Henderson and Stephen R. Wilson. Also mentioned in this account about the duel are: Samuel Hempstead, James Henderson, Daniel Kinchelow, Robert Kinchelow, John Melrose, Hugh Phelps, Dr. Joseph Spencer, John Stephenson, Thomas Tavenner, Sylvester Ward, and James Wilson. Research on the lives and backgrounds of the participants and those connected with the duel is also included separately from the transcribed letter.

The papers of Colonel William McCleery of Morgantown, a Revolutionary War veteran, attorney, county clerk, prosecuting attorney, representative from Monongalia County to the Federal Constitutional Convention, founder of the Presbyterian Church in Morgantown, and landholder and purchasing agent. The papers include correspondence, typescripts, land records, and some printed materials. Much of the correspondence is between McCleery and his agent, Benjamin Oden of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, regarding a debt owed McCleery by General Henry Lee. Later letters to Matthew Gay concern the purchase, operation, and sale of the Monongalia Iron Works, and landholdings in Ohio and Indiana. The typescripts include sketches of McCleery, Isabelle Stockton McCleery, John Minor, and James Swan. Correspondents include William Shinn and James and John Swan. Other letters are by or mention Aaron Burr, William Haymond, Thomas Jefferson, Zackquill Morgan, and John Rutherford.

Papers relating to the Wilson, Lewis, and Ruffner families of Prince Edward County, Virginia, Kanawha County, [West] Virginia, St. Charles County, Missouri, and Fairfield County, Ohio. Correspondence between Nathaniel V. Wilson and Dr. Goodridge Wilson, concerning land purchases, preparation for the settlement of the family, care of livestock, employment of slaves, salt making and marketing, and the market price of salt. Other members of the family migrated to St. Charles County, Missouri, and to Fairfield County, Ohio, and land prices, suitable crops, settlement and railroad building in Missouri comprise much of their correspondence. A third generation member of the family, Virgy Wilson Hall and her husband, John G. Hall, were missionaries in Matamoras, Mexico, and Colombia, South America, and her correspondence with her mother comments on living conditions, progress of the missionary work, revolution in Colombia, and health and living conditions of the residents of the Barranquilla area. In addition there is a will of Col. Charles Lewis, a series of letters between two doctors concerning health problems and treatment of various illnesses, and two diaries by Mrs. Daniel Ruffner, 1846, and Elizabeth Ruffner Wilson, 1871-1872, commenting on family life and community activities in Fairfield County, Ohio, and Kanawha County, [West] Virginia. All are photocopies. Material covers the years 1774-1942.

Transcript of a trial in the circuit superior court of Wood County and appeal to the General Court of Virginia concerning citizens of Ohio who were arrested by Virginia authorities while helping slaves escape.
