Eight letters from brother in Tientsin, China to his sister in Oregon, both of whom expatriated from Britain. Both were British ex-patriots. Alfred was a chemist and working for the Imperial Chinese Mint at the time of this letters. Lillian was a food columnist for the Oregonian newspaper. Alfred writes about current events in his area, the ousting of all of the Japanese from his region, activities in Afghanistan, work progress, some of his publications in scientific journals, and of his charge, a small girl whom he is determined to have learn English and become a teacher of such. As a last resort he would allow her to become a missionary. Alfred also comments in most of his letters how infrequently he receives letters from his sister, and how often they seem to get lost while en route to him.

Approximately fifty record storage boxes of Carl Neprud (1889-1976), U.S. government official, consultant in the Far East, personal and professional papers relating to his years in China primarily from the mid 1920s through the 1940s. Includes some material on the Nixon era.

Diaries, personal correspondence, and genealogy, 1900-1979, concerning Louise Alberta West Galt (b. 1876) and Howard Spilman Galt (1872-1948), who were missionaries to China between approximately 1899-1940, and their daughter Mable Mildred Galt (b. 1900), a social worker and minister's wife living in the United States. Of special interest is the diary of Louise A. W. Galt written during the summer of 1900 during the siege of Peking during the Boxer Rebellion.

Three letters from Helena C. Koiner, a Virginia-born missionary working in China, to Elizabeth Van Dyck. The first letter details Koiner's departure from San Francisco to Yokohama for China. Describes the people on the boat with her in great detail, including missionary families, Chinese and Japanese families heading home, a few unattached men, and a group "trying to drink themselves to death" before they left port. She also gossips about a nice Dutch scientist with whom she has been playing Bridge and the musical entertainment on board the ship.
