Letter, n.y. January 14, Dolley P. Madison [Richmond, Va.] to Margaret Lowther Page (Mrs. John Page), Rosewell, York [County, Va.]. Written before John Page's death in 1808. James Madison served in the Virginia House of Delegates in 1799 and 1800 and the letter is postmarked Richmond. Discusses her disappointment that she and her husband missed seeing the Pages and the Bishop James Madison. Entreats the Pages to spend the next summer with the Madisons in Orange; hopes Mrs. McClane will accompany them; Mrs. J. Mayo sends affectionate greetings. Letter is incomplete and has been encapsulated. 2 p. on 1 leaf ; 17.5 cm. x 37.5 cm.

Typescript copies of letters and extracts, written by Edward Coles (1786-1868), who held the positions of secretary to President James Madison and Governor of Illinois. Subjects covered by the letters include James Madison and the War of 1812; Madison's not emancipating persons enslaved by him at his death; the claiming of public lands by individual states; the estate of James Monroe; Andrew Jackson; Thomas Jefferson's authorship of the Ordinance of 1787; and Jefferson's relationship with John Adams. Typescripts of letters written by Edward Coles to Nicholas Biddle, Joseph C. Cabell, Henry Clay, Albert Gallatin, Thomas Jefferson, Dolley Madison, James Madison, Joel R. Poinsett, Henry S. Randall, Thomas Jefferson Randolph, William Cabell Rives, Charles Sumner, Martin Van Buren and Robert C. Winthrop, among other correspondents.

This collection of historic manuscripts dates from 1607-1933, with the bulk of materials dating from 1738-1868. The correspondence, journals and diaries, legal and financial records, estate documents, and printed ephemera in the collection primarily relate to the Washington and Custis families, the Revolutionary War, and society life in antebellum Washington D.C. and Virginia.

Letters written to Grigsby by L. S. Joynes, Thomas R. Joynes and Benjamin S. Ewell concerning a professorship for Edward S. Joynes and the Grammar School at the College of William and Mary. Includes constitution, 1854, of the Jamestown Society, Washington, D. C. and one issue of the newspaper, the Richmond Standard, 29 May 1880, which had an article on the Henry family of Virginia (descended from John Henry and Sarah Winston Syme.

Dates; 1792-1831, 1931; document and correspondence (some are copies). Includes letters between James Madison, Sr. (1723-1801) and his son President James Madison, Jr., his brother Bishop James Madison, Josiah Quincy, Robert Walsh, and others. Also includes engravings and prints of Madison and a "Report of the Overseers of Harvard University" commenting of the new constitution recently submitted to the people of Virginia. Letters discuss politics, family life in Virginia, religion, and other topics. Also includes a 1931 invitation to the unveiling of the bust of James Madison at Richmond, Va. and photographs of the Madison bust.

Correspondence, notes, typescripts, and genealogical charts of James M. Owens concerning genealogy of the Madison family of Virginia with emphasis on President James Madison and Bishop James Madison. Includes photocopies of letters of President James Madison and Bishop James Madison; and two original letters, 1804 and 1832, of James Madison and one, 1846, of John Quincy Adams.

Consists of two letters written by John Marshall. Letter, 1833 August 11, replies to Major Henry Lee's criticisms of the two-volume condensed edition of Marshall's Life of Washington published in 1832. Battle of Bunker Hill occurred before George Washington took command. Regrets that Champe's affair was omitted. The statement of Henry Lee (1756-1818) refutes the malignant remark of Thomas Jefferson. Did not have letter of George Washington to Henry Lee, Sr. Changed the account of Hobkirk's Hill (South Carolina) because of the letter of General Davie and there is no direct contradiction between Davie's letter and the account given by Henry Lee (1756-1818). Did not look at Lee's review of Johnson's Life of Green. Gives his reason for not mentioning Washington's opinion on the author of the Newburg letters. Letter of Jefferson to Elbridge Gerry regarding the appointment of Marshall, Gerry and Charles Cotesworth Pinckney as envoys to France and which of the three would favor peaceful measures with France. Surprised at Jefferson's subsequent correspondence. Does not understand Lee's reference to a letter from Jefferson to James Madison of the 1794 December 28 concerning John Jay (now known to have actually concerned George Joy). Transmits list of errata for second volume. In letter to John H. Lawrence of New York, 1834 February 21, believes the documents Lawrence has sent show that Woodhull and the militia near Jamaica, New York were there to intercept supplies and that Marshall was mistaken in writing in the biography of Washington that they were there to aid operations from Brooklyn and that Washington should not have counted on them to guard the road from Jamaica. Does not believe that he made an "allusion to the numbers of the militia under his command, nor to any jealousy of the military officer commanding at Brooklyn, nor is it hinted that the convention had placed him under that officer."
