This letter is from Toynbee to Washington and Lee University President, Francis P. Gaines, upon Toynbee's departure from the University in June 1958.

These autographed and signed letters are from Mrs. Wilson to Washington and Lee President Francis P. Gaines and his wife, Sadie duVergne Gaines. Included is an invitation and seating arrangement for a luncheon given by Mrs. Wilson for First Lady Jackie Kennedy. The letters show the close friendship between Mrs. Wilson and the Gaines family. The collection also includes a photograph of Edith Wilson.

This collection contains two letters, with envelopes, from First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson, wife of Woodrow Wilson, to Mrs. Frank P. Gaines (wife of President of Washington and Lee University).

This collection consists of a single Fork Union Academy Yearbook, 1907-1908. The yearbook contains the photographs and information on the student body at that time. Included within this student body is Francis P. Gaines, who would later become president of Washington and Lee University.

This collection consists of Gaines' correspondence, speeches, photographs, and printed matter, such as programs and newspaper clippings. Also included is Gaines family genealogy.

The Letitia Pate Evans Papers consist of both originals and copies of documents and letters between Letitia (Lettie) Pate (Whitehead) Evans and Washington and Lee University administrators and their contacts regarding the initial development of her philanthropic relationship with the school. Mrs. Evans, of Bedford County, Virginia, married Joseph Brown Whitehead in 1895 and together they were key in developing the Coca-Cola Company's early bottling facilities. After Joseph's death, Letitia sold the family's independently run bottling facilities to the Coca-Cola Company for Coca-Cola stock. She became a major shareholder of the company and was ultimately elected to the Coca-Cola Company's board of directors, thus becoming the first American woman to be director for a major national company. Letitia remarried Arthur Kelly Evans in 1913 and they resided in Hot Springs, Virginia. Washington and Lee University benefitted from numerous financial gifts of the Letitia Pate Evans Foundation. Correspondents include W&L president Francis Pendleton Gaines.

This collection consists of correspondence about the McCormick Endowment at Washington and Lee university, farm portfolios, material about the dedication of the McCormick Library and the McCormick celebration at W&L. Also included is genealogical material.

Highlights of this collection include material concerning the Washington and Lee Journalism Department, including course material, student papers, and lecture notes. Supplementing this course material are published materials on the history of film, 20th century war propaganda, the Nazification of Germany, Paris in the 1920's and the "Lost Generation." There also includes wide selections of personal research materials for projects such as Riegel's books Mobilizing for Chaos and Crown of Glory; collections on Riegel's travels to Central and South America and Europe including Germany during the 1930s, and the typescript of his unpublished autobigraphy to 1945 titled "Hacking It."
