The collection consists primarily of genealogical notes on a number of Virginia and West Virginia families. There are also lists of war pensioners, copies of county and parish records, historical news clippings on Virginia and West Virginia, one box of newsclippings and other material relating to Wood County history and a folder of John J. Jackson papers, 1837-1884.

The nucleus of this collection was created from papers given to the Association by Ann Pamela Cunningham around the time of her retirement as Regent. Several other Vice Regents followed her example and later donated their papers as well. These records were referred to as the "Early Records" since the time they were first established as an archival collection. A large portion of this collection is correspondence concerning the founding of the MVLA and the operation of Mount Vernon as a historic site. Other important resources are the appeals written by Ann Pamela Cunningham and the Vice Regents, governing documents, subscription or donation lists, printed material or publications, and bound volumes such as ledgers or scrapbooks. Individual items were added to the collection as they were acquired. The Early Records includes items dated 1852-1951, however the bulk of the material dates from 1858 to around 1880.

This collection consists primarily of alphabetized personnel-related records documenting medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, and professional faculty affiliated with the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center. The materials were created and accumulated in support of administrative, recruitment, and institutional activities. Records may include biographical and professional documentation, faculty publications, headshot photographs, resumes, curriculum vitae, correspondence, and related administrative files reflecting the academic and professional involvement of individuals within the Health Sciences Center.

The papers of prominent Barbour County native, Alston G. Dayton (1857-1920), a lawyer, politician, and West Virginia Federal Court Judge, including correspondence, professional papers and manuscripts concerning West Virginia politics and development of state industry. Also included are the papers of Dayton's father, Spencer Dayton, lawyer, and Fred O. Blue, lawyer. Correspondence offers much insight into the attitudes and goals of these men and into their considerable direct and indirect influence on the state's development and welfare.

Records of Samy Elias, West Virginia University engineering professor, documenting the planning, design, and implementation of the Personal Rapid Transit System, or "PRT". Includes correspondence, reports, drawings, clippings, slides, and other material.
